Believe it or not, the first known pop-up element in a book appeared in an astrological manuscript in 1306. During the ensuing centuries, movable mechanics were used in more and more books--but only for adults. In the 1700s a British bookseller came up with the idea of illustrating well-known children's stories with movable flaps of paper. The rest, as they say, is history. Now aspiring paper mechanics (creative engineer-artists who create dimensional and movable books, otherwise known as pop-ups) can learn the how-tos and wherefores of this marvelous craft. From tip-ons to dummies to glue knock-outs, all the intricacies of pop-up production are outlined and explained.

Readers are invited to take apart the sample pop-ups (as long as they promise to put them back together!) to determine exactly how each score folds and where each glue point is. Instructions are somewhat advanced, but the dimensional samples and the step-by-step photographic essay on how a pop-up is made will ease the journey. Grade 3 Up-Two eminent paper engineers offer a nearly encyclopedic gallery of moving effects, with more than 50 different working models. They are set-when appropriate-on flaps, making the inner workings visible, and include precise design and assembly notes, all sandwiched between a partial history of pop-ups and an artist's-eye view of the production stages of this popular art form. A commanding safety note warns children away from craft knives, and though most of the effects require dexterity and patience to reproduce, the authors have flagged easier projects. All of the models, even the spectacular, full-spread opener, are constructed of white, undecorated stock, but the authors urge aspiring paper engineers to expand the possibilities by experimenting with combined effects or even inventing new ones. Despite some sketchy peripherals-the opening history stops with Jonathan Miller's The Human Body (Viking, 1983)-this book is not only a work of art in itself, but also a practical manual that takes a huge step past Barbara Valenta's Pop-o-mania (Dial, 1997). If you are thinking of tackling making pop ups in any form - BUY THIS BOOK FIRST!!!!! I have recently bought at least 6 "how to" books about pop ups and THIS is the one that defines ALL the others!!! After this book, they all made perfect sense on how to construct!!! The editors and designers of this book are definitely in the GENIUS category!!! What a perfect idea to actually SHOW you each example that you can see premade and totally understand what you are going to do!! TOTAL GENIUS!!! After this book, I am going to buy every one David Carter has published and check out any possible ones by James Diaz! They are wonderfully creative and intelligent, no doubt!!!! BUY THIS BOOK- you will see what I mean!

A pricey but very exhaustive inventory of paper pop up designs. Best for grown ups only.

As a recent arrival in the ranks of popup lovers, I should probably defer to those whose popup works are more extensive than mine. I can offer only my limited work using a few source books, of which this is the outstanding resource. The book demonstrates a very large number of paper devices by keeping each demonstration very small but extremely clear. I admit I had no idea before reading this book that there are so many possibilities for making paper objects move in interesting ways. If you are one of the curious folk who must see the popup work in order to understand it, then this elegant book might be for you, although the price is not within everyone's range.

If you ever wonder how the end product looks like, this is the book. By having the final product in front of me, it allows me to see where my mistakes are, how the mechanism works. I like that it includes wheels and pull-outs. It has beginner as well as complicated popups. It does not really have step by step instructions so you might need a supplementary book. But like I said, I like being able to touch and see the end product. I have not seen any pop up books with the actual product in the book except this one. I like the contrast between the colored background and the white pop-up because it clearly shows the construction. As much as I like the neon colored pages, it doesn't help me with reading the small black font - it creates a scintillating optical illusion (this is a negative). This is a book to use over and over again as you progress with your skills in paper engineering

good book, lot of advice, but not always useful

This book is written by a psychologist and an educator (neither of whom "attended" medical school) and it shows; although there is a vast amount of information and advice in this book, it's often not very useful to the medical student. Reading this book reminds of fans at hockey games that have never played hockey, but still yell "SHOOT, PASS, GO LEFT.." It's very easy to give advice from the side-line, but unless you're actually doing it, it's hard to have a good idea of what it's like.

In anticipation for medical school, i've also read "how to excel in medical school", and more recently "how to study in medical school", and i can honestly say the better books are those authored by MD's (such as the latter two), hence authors that have gone through the process themselves. I feel their advice is a lot more practical and applicable.

Overall good, but if i had to choose just one book, i'd probably choose something else.

Study Without Stress: Mastering Medical Sciences

I was required to purchase this book for the Seton Hall Physician Assistant Program. I have not finished reading it yet, but so far it seems very helpful. Its a great way to learn time management. The book has exercises in it that make you analyze your day down to every 30 minutes to best utilize your time. This book should be good for anyone who needs help with managing study time even if they're not studying medicine. My boyfriend has a rigorous academic schedule at West Point and I'm going to have him read it when I'm done.

Still stressed..not studying.

was a required read for my program. love it. Great coaster for those pesky beverages while I continue to procrastinate my studies. It so happens that I have a test tomorrow and am yet writing this review, That is not the book's fault though. It does offer some useful advice on how to make the most of your time, but for the most part, it's just telling you to find out how to motivate yourself if you are not already. Most of the tips are common sense, but it does offer some unexpected pep talks. The price was the only drawback in my opinion.

Stellar series

My son has been taking Japanese in high school and uses this series of books. Last year was his first. Japanese is a very difficult language to learn. There are three different writing styles (alphabets) and obviously the sentence structure is not the same as English. He loved these books, they were fun to use and easy to understand. The diagrams, pictures and flash cards are great learning tools. The learning process is good for all students since you learn aurally, visually and by touch(the cards). I teach ESL and kids with learning problems and this book uses the same processes I use for them. The only problem I've found is I can no longer watch a Japanese movie in peace and I'm forced to by ramen in bulk.

A deep, detailed, and delightful romance

I rate this about 4.5 stars, rounded up to five for Amazon's rating system. The level of detail of the characters, along with the complex relationship, surprised me a great deal.

Gable runs a small horse ranch. Due to an accident, his foot is mangled and he's in near-constant pain. He had a sexual relationship with this last ranch-hand, Grant, but Grant had taken off, and Gable is now realizing he can no longer manage his ranch alone. He puts up a short help-wanted ad at the post office, offering room and board, with the salary to be paid after six weeks when he can sell off some of his herd. Flynn is a bit of a drifter. He doesn't choose to be, it's just that the few places he's wound up in during his young life held no joy or promises, so he would move on. The help-wanted ad he sees is perfect. With room and board taken care of, he won't need a salary until the job is over, and he loves ranch work, having performed it on his own family's ranch. Both men are gay, and though each finds the other to be attractive, sparks don't actually fly until much later.

The characters are unique and finely developed in this story. Gable is a man who never really learned how to love, so when love does finally come around, he's not sure what to do with it. He's much older than Flynn, and is also "damaged goods", so he doesn't date believe Flynn would want to stay around anyway. Also, he didn't have a good experience with his last lover. Grant was closeted, and Gable fell into an odd sexual-but-non-intimate relationship. He really doesn't know how to have an intimate relationship. Flynn is all about the intimacy, and even when the two start having sex, Gable's tendency to keep intimacy out makes Flynn feel used. This is a very strong point for the novel, as in most romantic tales, the sex itself is almost always mind-blowingly perfect. Here, it's almost a hindrance to romance. Besides this, a worsening of Gable's injury leaves him dependent upon Flynn, and totally despondent, which also strains the relationship just as it's starting.

Interestingly, the relationship is settled long before the book's conclusion. There is a healthy amount of secondary characters who have had influence in Gable's life, and what makes the story interesting is that the romance is settled and secure long before the book's conclusion. We witness the romance, then continue to watch the pair, as a couple, relate to, and resolve, many issues dealing with the secondary characters. It's refreshing.

There is a slight tendency to feel that the book meanders at a few points, so pacing probably could have been just a little tighter, but only a little bit. That's not really a complaint, just an observation. This long detailed story ultimately fulfills, with some heartfelt emotion, wit, drama, suspense, and colorful and compelling characters.

I was liking this story very much. I enjoyed the way Flynn and Gable met, how they worked together and the sexual tension between the two. I even liked the fact Flynn and Gable started singing 'I love you's' way too soon. I liked Flynn and his need to have a permanent home and how he just wanted to take care of Gable. I liked Gable because he was so confused on why Flynn was staying with him and even how self-conscious and how low his self-worth really was.

However, while I liked the story in the beginning, it kind of took a wrong turn somewhere for me. I didn't enjoy how Gable essentially was using Flynn as a f***-toy/housekeeper when it was clear Flynn wanted an actual relationship with feelings. Gable would be lovey dovey one moment then all but running from the room and cold as ice the next. It was like he was bi-polar and his actions towards Flynn when he was pissed frustrated me.

I didn't like the direction the story went in. I'm not overly fond of ex-lovers being in a story (Grant is in almost the whole last half of the book) and I don't enjoy female characters that much either (the best friend, Calley). Really, I didn't like how big a part Calley and her pregnancy played in the last half of the story. It felt wrong and inconsistent with the beginning. Honestly, I felt like it took away from my enjoyment especially when I felt like Calley was kind of manipulating Gable into being the babies daddy (while not actually having to be a daddy). It just felt wrong to me and like she was dumping all her problems on Gable and expected him to fix them for her so she could be happy and him and Flynn could be miserable instead. Okay, I may be over exaggerating on the miserable part but it still felt like she dumped all her problems on Gable and expected him to fix them.

The story was also very inconsistent in general. Flynn would say one thing and then end up doing something different. Gable said he'd never donate sperm unless he could physically be the kid's dad then ends up donating sperm. There was also the fact that the things mentioned in the beginning ended up being something different in the end (Flynn says Gable and him never cuddled in the beginning of their relationship which is inaccurate as they did cuddle, how they never slept close together before the accident when, in fact, they did) and other things like that.

I also felt like the second half of the story was a whole setup for the sequel (featuring Hunter and Grant). A lot of the scenes in the story were also unnecessary and just seemed like a filler. The timeline around the events had me questioning whether it was accurate or not. I also felt like the writing ranged between stunted and choppy. It made reading a bit difficult especially when it seemed to drag a bit.

With that said, I did like the story to some extent. I liked the characters enough and I liked the conflict regarding Gable's leg. I found that interesting although I had a problem coping with Gable's semi-easy acceptance of its loss considering he was so anti-amputation.

All in all, this was an okay story. I liked the beginning but I wasn't so fond of the rest. I liked Flynn even if what he said was counteracting other things he said and did. I think this will be a hit or miss with others, though, so I encourage people to still try reading it and make up your own mind whether you liked the story or not.

A heartwarming and tender cowboy romance.

This is an enjoyable cowboy romance with enough emotions to satisfy. I have to say I was not that impressed in the beginning when both guys started checking each other out and I thought "oh dear, it is the same old lust and sex". But the emotional struggles soon set in, which I thought the writer has expressed well.

Whatever they started out of attraction and loneliness was not suppose to last. Flynn has looks and is a drifter. Gable is so much older and really has nothing to hold the younger man back. Gable realizes that and keeps pushing Flynn away even when the younger man hints at a relationship. Their fragile relationship is tested when Gable's health turns for the worst and is unable to decide for himself during a life threatening moment. Here we see Flynn's strength as he stays by his man and shows a maturity beyond his years. Living with a recuperating invalid is no easy task and there are quite a few angst filled moments during Gable's healing which I again thought the writer expresses well. Gable's constant rejection is hurtful but understandable. Even so there are times when I wish Gable will show more backbone and be more "manly". On the other hand Flynn seems too good to be true even if I like this character more. But Flynn does have his own hurtful past and he is not just a drifter as initially portrayed. One good question raised here is how vital is sex in a relationship?

There is a little complication when Gable's ex reappears and hooks up with the neighboring rich rancher. Grant and Hunter makes another fine gay cowboy couple and I can easily see the writer giving them their own story in the future. The only complaint I have is one very bizarre situation involving Gable's close female friend's attempt to have babies. Ouch! this "sperm donating" thing is just odd. I love Diplomacy by the same writer. Her follow-up effort after Diplomacy was so so. With Clouds and Rain, I am glad this writer has not lost her touch after all.
