About the Author
A consulting engineer residing in Montgomery, texas, Heinz. P. Bloch has held machinery-oriented staff and line positions with Exxon affiliates in the United States, Italy, Spain, England, The Netherlands, and Japan. His career spanned several decades prior to his 1986 retirement as Exxon Chemical's regional machinery specialist for the USA. Since his retirement from Exxon, he has been in demand throughout the world as a consultant and trainer in the areas of failure avoidance, root cause failure identification, and reliability improvement. Mr. Bloch is the author/co-author of thirteen books and over 200 other publications on subjects related to machinery reliability and failure avoidance. He is the Reliability and Equipment Editor of Hydrocarbon Processing magazine and has served as chair of the annual conference program for Hydrocarbon Processing's Process Plant Reliability Conference for a number of years.

I am a rotating equipment specialist, and consider this a very thorough book on all aspects of reciprocating compressors, from the general design, installation, and maintenance point of view. What sets this book apart from others is that the author is a reliability specialist, and many of the hidden details that can lead to failures are pointed out. In addition, the book is extremely well illustrated with large clear pictures and drawings.

When a book is written by Bloch you know it is going to be practical and useful. When Heinz teams up with a receprocating compressor expert like John Hoefner you know the information will be unique. There are not that many books on reciprocating compressors, their operation, maintenance and troubleshooting, and this book bings it all together. This is the kind of book I needed at the start of my career when I was working for an engine builder. It will help new as well as seasoned vererans. Well done Heinz and John.

Excellent as a reference

This book is intended to be a textbook for drafting students (high school, maybe college). I bought it as a reference book for CAD work, however, and it has been useful.

It covers some hand drafting subjects, CAD, and subjects that are applicable to either. Some of the topics include GD&T, weld symbols, gears, fasteners, and bearings.

For learning and for general reference, I'd recommend it.

An almost palpable shock -

I've read a number of Graham Greene's more acclaimed and "serious" novels and had a variety of reactions, from "loved it!" ("The End of the Affair") to "couldn't get through a chapter" ("The Quiet American"). But none of these prepared me for "Stamboul Train." Modestly described as an "entertainment," and later more or less dismissed by its author, this novel turned out to be, truly, one of the most amazing and moving books I've ever read.
This is an early novel, but there's nothing raw about it. The characters are superficially "stereotypes," but the book turns out to be about the power that externally prescribed roles possess, in life as well as art. Each of the characters, from Myatt the "rich spoiled Jew" to Coral the plain, innocent chorus girl, turn out to be something different from their types, yet they're never wholly able to escape from them. I can't think of an author, except possibly Tolstoy, who does a better job conveying characters who believe two (or three or seven) things at the same time than Greene does here.
Greene does employ stereotypes, particularly of Jews and lesbians, and that might be one reason the book is out of fashion. Yet Greene explicitly grapples with and explodes the stereotype, in the case of Myatt. Even the lesbian lady journalist, who doesn't fare as well (Greene's portrayal of her borders on mean-spiritedness) is so richly characterized and individual that she takes on a life beyond the stereotype.
I haven't even touched on Greene's innovative use of point-of-view - a multi-faceted third-person, with sudden shifts hardly united by an overarching consciousness. The effect mirrors the way these "strangers on a train" slip in and out of each other's lives. It also produces one of the most amazing bedroom scenes I've ever read.

A young Jewish currant magnate who is only "a Jew" to Europeans; a virginal chorus-girl who is perceived only as a "nice pair of legs"; a newswoman who hates men for their arrogance; a self-impressed murderer; and a fugitive Communist leader are all riding a train whose ultimate destination is Istanboul. Greene skilfully weaves their stories together and apart, forcing the reader to ponder questions about love, sex, duty, and morality.

Early Greene novel hints at the greatness to come.

A sad cynicism lies at the root of Greene's dark humor in this very early (1932) novel, Greene's fourth novel and the first entertainment to be written and published for a wide audience. A Jewish businessman, a lesbian journalist, her rebellious young companion, a dancer in need of a job, a Socialist physician wanted in Serbia for treason, and an Austrian thief meet and interact aboard the Orient Express on a trip from London to Istanbul (Stamboul). Each person in this motley group hopes that some remarkable change will occur to him or her as a result of the trip, but though all eventually get their wish, fate has something devious up its sleeve for each one. These twists and turns, sometimes humorous and sometimes immensely sad, constitute the heart of the novel.

Unlike Greene's later novels, with their fully developed characters and religious themes, this novel's characters are often stereotypes, and the action is often designed simply to bring the characters down, showing that no matter what dreams or goals they may have, that ultimately they have no control over their destinies. Greene's later, much more intensely realized themes--sin and atonement, innocence and guilt, love of life and fear of death, piety and corruption, sex and religion--are missing here, and as the action unfolds and the characters are manipulated, the reader easily recognizes the "bones" of the themes which will later come into full flower in Greene's mature philosophical novels. As a series of tours de force, and as a glimpse into the creative process of a writer who, at this point, was just beginning to come into his own, this is an intriguing novel, loaded with insights, a fascinating and enjoyable read. I adore these books!

I think that the whole set of Beginner Books is wonderful. There is the green book, purple, blue, red. I am very fond of all of them and they give a variety of stories to enjoy. When I read my kids books, it is nice to keep the same book out for a few nights of reading. When they are older, I can use this to teach them to read without having to resort to something boring like the Dick and Jane books. I plan on collecting them all in the end.

Donald L. Turcotte is Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Geology, University of California, Davis. In addition to this book, he is author or co-author of 3 books and over 400 research papers, including Fractals and Chaos in Geology and Geophysics (Cambridge University Press, 1992 and 1997) and Mantle Convection in the Earth and Planets (with Gerald Schubert and Peter Olson, Cambridge University Press, 2001). Professor Turcotte is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, Honorary Fellow of the European Union of Geosciences, and Fellow of the Geological Society of America, and is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is the recipient of several medals, including the Day Medal of the Geological Society of America, the Wegener Medal of the European Union of Geosciences, the Bowie and Whitten Medals of the American Geophysical Union, the Regents (New York State) Medal of Excellence, and Caltech's Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Gerald Schubert is Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is co-author with Donald Turcotte and Peter Olson of Mantle Convection in the Earth and Planets (Cambridge University Press, 2001) and author of over 530 research papers. This is a great book with lots of fun problems

This is probably the Sexiest Geology book I've ever opened!! This is a great book with lots of fun problems. The appendix is very useful, especially the list of all the variables used and the section the variable is introduced. The only reason I give it 4 stars and not 5 is the assumptions you have to make in order to solve many of the problems and there are minor typos in a few problems. The typos are easily recognized but the assumptions take some thinking. Which can be fun but stressful when you have deadlines.

Beautiful book! I loved how the author explained, step by step, how to determine what your brand identity should be for maximum effectiveness with your target market. REALLY helpful book. Just the right length. It struck a good balance between delivering great information and not being overwhelming. Would be excellent for any solo-preneur or small business who wants to establish their own brand identity, but it would also be a good book for those who might still end up hiring a designer. It's an excellent place to start, for sure, and I give it my highest recommendation.

This book is everything I hoped it would be and much much more. It balances practical advice with inspirational quotes, beautiful images and real world examples. It's written in such a lovely tone that you feel like Fiona is standing next to you, guiding you through every step. And it really does cover every step of creating a brand identity from colours and photography, to logos and websites. I spent 12 years working in advertising and branding and I've learnt a lot from this book, and perhaps more importantly, been inspired and motivated. I wish it had been around when I was launching previous ventures - I will certainly have to hand for my next one.

About the Author
Tracy Brower, PhD is an expert in organizational effectiveness and the sociology of work - how humans affect their work-life and how their work-life affects them. She has worked with hundreds of organizations over her career, as senior advisor to a who's who list of companies and the executives who run them.
Tracy currently is the Director of Performance Environments at Herman Miller, Inc. She leads teams specializing in helping companies create living offices. Tracy's career includes experience in a wide range of industries, non-profits, higher education institutions, and healthcare organizations. Her expertise spans HR, OD, real estate/facilities, workplace, change management, organizational culture, TPS, and organizational effectiveness.
Tracy has written for "Area Development, The Drucker Institute, The Leader," and more. She has been quoted in "The Wall Street Journal," MMQB, Green Source, and others. Tracy has also taught university courses, and in addition to her PhD she holds a Master's of Management degree. She is a member of CoreNet Global and the American Sociological Association. She is an executive advisor to MSU's Arts + the Innovative Workplace project as well as UCLA's CityLAB.

A must read book for all business leaders looking to lead forward

Dr. Tracey Brower's book Bring Work to Life by Bringng Life to Work effectively demonstrates how organizations can both engage their people and drive results. As a newer leader to an exisiting organization I found the book very insightful on how to redirect the organization by focusing on integrating work and life with employee engagement and in turn improving organizational performance.This book is easy, compelling reading with examples that help as a leader put into action ideas that will produce results. It will provide you with a critical perspective on your organization that will lead to success.

Very readable, substantive guide for leaders and anyone interested in creating great places to work for their employees and for colleagues. The information and advice is pragmatic .. lots of great examples. If you want to help your organization be the kind of place where employees can find balance and opportunities for engagement, you'll find this to be a great read.

Engagement is the foundation of success.

Every one of us has struggled to find the elusive work-life balancing act. In the later afternoon meeting that runs too long and threatens to keep us from our child's recital or from dinner with our spouse. As technology and a global economy blurs the line between work and the rest of our life in a non-stop 24/7 culture where only profit and quarterly results matter. Yet we all know that what motivates us to do our best work goes well beyond the bottom line. If we risk losing the humanity of our organizations then we risk the engagement of our people. So, do we focus on profits or people? Brower adeptly points out that it's not zero sum. At the end of the day engaging employees drives bottom line results.
