One gem and five lumps of coal

"Orientations" may not be Maugham's first book of stories but it is very early and he had definitely not found his voice as a writer. There are five very bad stories and one excellent one. I hate to say this, as I am a serious fan of Maugham, based on his later novels, such as "Of Human Bondage and "Moon and Sixpence," his Ashenden stories and his essays in "The Vagrant Mood." I read Ted Morgan's biography and I just downloaded the rest of his novels and essays, which I'm eager to read.
But "Orientations" can only be recommended to completists and scholars. The five bad stories appear to have been written by an adolescent with no knowledge of the world that grownups really live in. The long smooth sentences and the latinate vocabulary show an expensive education but can't hide the juvenile conception and mediocre execution. These are the kind of stories that secondary students would publish in their school literary magazines, if their secondary school happened to be Eton. Three of the stories are set in Spain, but it is the Spain of magazine clich�s and fantastic tales, of the kind that Poe, Hawthorne and even Edith Wharton could dash off in an afternoon. Another story, about two straight-laced English art lovers in France, takes a very long time to reach the obvious conclusion. There is a story about a clerk who gets religion, but it is as flat as the protagonist and his wife, who never acquire a 3rd dimension. In one of the other stories a monk loses his faith and there is no reason for the reader to care.
The last story though, "Daisy", is the real deal, or the real Maugham. Here his mature voice sounds loud and clear. (Spoiler follows) Set in an English village, it tells the story of a lower middle class girl whose father sees that she gets more education than her stupid mother feels is proper. Disaster strikes when Daisy runs off with a soldier. She sinks as low as possible and is disowned and ostracized. That would be the end of the tale in a normal Victorian or even Edwardian story, but the God the villagers worship decides not to play by the rules they expect him to and Daisy rebounds with miraculous good fortune, while her pious family begin a slow descent towards poverty. The characters of Daisy, her father and mother come to life on the page and they become people we know. The villagers are caricatures, but they provide a Greek chorus to remind you that this story is going the wrong way. Maugham drops the authorial commentary and digressions of the other stories and his ironic sympathy shines clearly through simple yet highly polished prose. The is the Maugham who wrote the later masterpieces. The other five stories are just wrong turns that he took on the way to discovering himself as a writer. You would be wasting your time to read them. You have been warned.

Somerset Maughan at some of his best!

This is a small but really good collection of some of Maughan's short stories. Written in his special style, the stories are an interesting read, and represent great examples of his art.

The master on his mastery

Richard Blackmur in his introduction to this volume tells us that most of these prefaces were written for the famed 'New York Edition of his works. According to Lubbock," The labour was atorment, a care, and a delight, as his letters and the Prefaces themselves amply show. The thinking and the writing were hard and full and critical to the point of exasperation; the purpose was high, the reference wide, and the terms of discourse had to be conceived and defined as successive need for them arose. He had to elucidate and appropriate for the critical intellect the substance and principle of his career as an artist, and he had to do this, such was the idiosyncracy of his mind-specifically, example following lucid example with the consistency of mathematicl equation, so that in the Poetics, if his premises were accepted his conclusions must be taken as inevitable." p. vii

Blackmur says that criticism has never been more ambitious, or more useful. He cites James' definition of his task in his preface to 'Roderick Hudson'. "These notes represent over a considerable course the continuity of an artist's endeavor, the growth of the whole operative consciousness, and best of all, perhaps their own tendency to multiply , with the implication, thereby of a memory enriched'.

The trader may use a delta neutral strategy because he is predicting a sideways price pattern or price movement within a modest sized channel.� The delta neutral trade is just one choice among several options strategies. If the trader is bullish, he selects a bullish trade; if he is bearish, he selects a bearish trade. And if his prediction is for a sideways price movement, he selects a delta neutral trade.

This trader is using a delta neutral trading strategy as a directional trade; it is based on the trader's prediction for the future price movement of the underlying stock or market index. The directional trader has a specific interest with particular knowledge about an individual stock or index and a prediction for its future value.

Dr. Given distinguishes non-directional trading from delta neutral trading in one critically important way. If one is trading non-directionally, he develops a series of rules for entry, exit and adjustment of a delta neutral trading strategy and then enters and manages the position dictated by those rules month after month. He has made no prediction of the future; he just manages the position each day based on the market's price move that day. The trader is no longer predicting the market's next move tomorrow; the trader is reacting to what the market gives him today.

The non-directional trader tries his best not to predict where the market is going tomorrow. Instead, he focuses on where the market is today and the actions his rules dictate. He follows the rules. I think this is one of the best options books I've ever read

I think this is one of the best options books I've ever read. It explains some of basics of options, the psychology of trading, & even includes custom-built trading systems for various non-directional strategies. He focuses on condors, butterflies, calendars, double calendars, & double diagonals. The only reason I didn't give it a 5-star is because the graphs & charts are a little difficult to read because the pages are smaller than his first book.

Dr. Given has written an honest and sober review of delta-neutral trading, just as it is from a retail trader's perspective. Anyone looking for a place to start in options trading education has to navigate thru plethora of "educators", some promising unrealistic results, coupled with poorly conceived money management advice. As for a retail trader risk management is the very key to long term success this book is a must for anyone considering trading a real money account.

I downloaded the sample, that's how I figured it out so just giving others a heads up because I would have been annoyed to have to go through the process of requesting a refund for wrong book when it can be easily avoided.

About the Author

Dr. Deborah K. Padgett is widely known for her expertise in qualitative and mixed methods including this third edition and a companion text Qualitative and Mixed Methods in Public Health (Sage, 2012). She is first author of Housing First: Ending Homelessness, Transforming Systems and Changing Lives�(Oxford University Press, 2015) and has published extensively on mental health needs and service use of homeless adults and other underserved populations. Dr. Padgett was Principal Investigator on two NIMH-funded R01 grants, both qualitative studies of engagement and recovery among formerly homeless adults in supportive housing in New York City. �She served as President of the Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR), culminating in the establishment of the SSWR "Deborah K. Padgett Early Career Award" in recognition of her contributions. She is a member of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare (AASWSW) and serves on its Board. In 2013, Dr. Padgett received New York University’s Distinguished Teaching Award.

Too expensive

To me, this book is a joke. I'm currently taking a graduate course in qualitative methods offered in the public health department at my university and this is the text we are using. My first complaint, if you will, is that this text is far too expensive for what it is. In my opinion, its worth half of the list price, at best.

My overall opinion of the text is that it is very shallow. I could see this book being used in an undergraduate course where students had absolutely no prior experience with any qualitative research. If you have any background at all in qualitative research/methods/analysis, don't waste your time. The chapter on ethical issues is nothing that hasn't been said before by hundreds of other authors, and should be common sense to pretty much all researchers. Chapter 6 "Entering the Field and Conducting Observation" and Chapter 7 "Interviewing and Use of Documents" are likely to be covered in any general methods class, and again don't add anything special that most researchers, or graduate students, probably don't know already.

I also have a big issue with Chapter 8 "Data Analysis and Interpretation". This chapter spends far too much space discussing the use of qualitative data management/analysis software packages. The book was published in 2012, so I have the feeling that most people would not find it shocking that software is now used to analyze qualitative data. Also, Padgett spends maybe a solid fifteen pages on coding data, and most of this is geared towards grounded theory methods (and even in her discussion about that she never makes it clear to the reader which form of GTM she is speaking of). Since she repeatedly jumps between qualitative methods (GTM, , ethnography, case studies, phenomenological research, etc), she really leaves the reader wondering how analysis is carried out throughout the methods she discusses.

Nonetheless, my suggestion would be to avoid this text and to refer to more classic scholars in the particular area you are interested in working from (for example, GTM see works by Glaser, Glaser & Strauss, Strauss & Corbin, and Charmaz).
