About the Author

Carolin Duttlinger is University Lecturer in German at Oxford University, and Fellow and Tutor of Wadham College. She studied in Freiburg, Germany, and Cambridge, where she completed her doctorate in 2003. Her primary research interests lie in the field of twentieth-century German literature and thought, with particular reference to the relationship between literature and visual culture. She has published on writers such as Benjamin, Freud, Adorno, Sebald, and Thomas Kling and is the editor of a volume on Performance and Performativity in German Cultural Studies (2004). Her current project explores concepts of attentiveness in twentieth-century literature, science, and culture.

Rather expensive for a paperless, Kindle edition

I am a huge fan of Kindle, I read on my iPad (Kindle is iPad compatible). No trees involved, no need for a lamp so you don't disturb anyone at night, books get stored into the machine, you can go everywhere with your preferred library in your bag, if you're here you know what I mean.

But in this book's particular case, asking $77.90 for a paperless, coverless edition is outrageous, one would say "kafkaesque" .

Powerful analysis of the evolution of human civilization

If I were to list the top ten books of the century, this book would be one of them. Why? Because it dares to answer a question that few others have attempted, a question that is fundamental and vital to our future. It is the question: "What determines the direction in which civilization evolves?" Or, "What explains the overall thrust of history?" Or, "Are we shaping our own destiny, and if not, what is?" Not only does Schmookler dare to address the question, but the answer he comes up with is equal to the dimensions of the task.
If you think that the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden is adequate for explaining the history of civilization, this book is not for you. If you think that everything is made crystal clear by the Marxian analysis of the "material conditions" of life, this book is not for you. If you believe that spirit-beings elsewhere in the universe are guiding us toward some wonderful end, this book is not for you. But if you think big, and are ready for a magnificent, breathtaking, and sobering view of humanity's course, based on best-science research into prehistory and panoramic interdisciplinary insights, you will come to cherish this book. I, for one, am glad that it has a poetic title, The Parable of the Tribes, and not just an academic title such as its subtitle, The Problem of Power in Social Evolution, because the sweep of the book includes but encompasses more than straight intellectual analysis. It tells the human story, our story, with all the poignant, tragic, and hopeful implications.
The stroke of genius that powers this book is Schmookler's insight into the broader applicability of Darwin's categories of "diversity" and "selection." In effect, Schmookler has shown that these are categories from the discipline of logic. Darwin's genius was to take these purely logical categories and show how they could be applied to, and did apply to, the natural world, resulting in biological evolution. Schmookler's genius is to free these categories from their usual ties with biology, and to show us how they have operated in human history as the fundamental underlying forces shaping our destiny, for good or ill.
Just one of the many themes in this book is that there is a commonsense view that human creativity is what accounts for the diversity in variations of forms of civilization, and that human choice accounts for which of these variations get selected. Hence the idea of simple progress. But we live in a disenchanted era that knows better. Schmookler reminds us that "For a story of improvement, the history of civilization makes rather dismal reading, and as the culmination of ten thousand years of progress the twentieth century is deeply disappointing." (p. 7) Similarly, the "invisible hand" of the free market, where human choice is supposed to reign sovereign, has led to only pockets of prosperity in the world (granted that some are big pockets), and even that prosperity is itself rent with stress. What is it that is systematically distorting our cultures, our civilizations, in directions that we are not deliberately choosing? If we don't gain comprehension of it, how can we ever alter it toward selection of more humane, more intelligent, more loving, more fun variations?
The "parable" is that once some human tribe becomes habitually aggressive toward other tribes, all others are eventually forced to adopt the "ways of power." "Eventually" can mean a long time, but the systematic distortion is there. The ways of power seep into every aspect of human life, from relations between men and women to harsh upbringing of children to weapons development to forms of economic exchange. It is part of the wondrousness of this book to make your way through section after section, discovering how yet another broad area of human life is illuminated by the quiet or not-so-quiet struggle for power.
In the end, it is a noble vision that is offered by The Parable of the Tribes. It simultaneously engenders compassion for the human race (trapped in the struggle for power), and clears away the confusion and the obfuscation that is part of the problem. The ability to see the human race in its last ten-thousand-year development has only recently become possible, and Schmookler has made it actual. His book gives me hope that we humans can understand our own long history and begin to shape our own destiny for good.

Tough Reading, Great Bottom Line, a Classic

This is tough reading, in part because the publisher's choice of paper and font are not the best. As one who has previously recommended such books as Lionel Tiger's "The Manufacture of Evil: Ethics, Evolution, and the Industrial System", Norman Cousins "The Pathology of Power", and many other books on the pathologies of treating man as a "good", of scientific objectivity as "value neutral" and therefore bad, of secrecy as counter-productive to "precautionary principle" decision-making, I immediately recognized this book as an integrative work, possibly supplanting all those other books by bringing the various arguments together in one place.
This is indeed a brilliant product by a towering intellect, and it has the bibliography and index that one would expect from a world-class endeavor. I recommend it together with Philip Alott's "The Health of Nations: Society and Law beyond the State", Stewart Brand's "Clock of the Long Now", and John Lewis Gaddis "The Landscape of History".
The author's bottom line: not only must we come to grips with how power is managed in every nation and organization, but also we must manage at the *global* level if we are to succeed in optimizing fulfillment at the *individual* level.

The Origins of Violence

Imagine a group of tribes living within reach of one another. If all choose the way of peace, then all may live in peace. But what if all but one chooses peace?
So begins this paradigm-bending book, an elegant theory of social evolution, as well as a brilliant prescription for modern peacemakers. Schmookler not only accounts for the origins of the ancient cycle of human violence, he provides a path from domination, competition, and unilateral decision-making to partnership, cooperation, and multilateralism. As Schmookler guides the reader through possible answers to the parable, it becomes clear that, when faced with violence, whether one chooses to fight back, surrender, or run away, each "solution" tends to spread the power dynamics of violence through the system. Even the most peaceful culture, when forced to defend itself, must shift to that degree of militarism deemed necessary for survival.
The liberating message for peacemakers is that violence is neither a hard-wired aspect of human nature nor God the Father's indelible curse on humankind; rather, violence arose as a regrettable solution to human conflicts and has since spread from person to person and culture and culture like a social virus, or meme. By focusing on what Schmookler calls "the problem of power in social evolution," we can chart a new course through personal and political conflicts and find lasting, nonviolent answers to the parable's dilemma. A vital book in the peacemaker's library.

This book was first published in 2006 to teach young children, primarily ages 4-9, how to be bucket fillers. Since then, bucket filling has spread around the world to help millions of people of all ages have happier and more rewarding lives. In this revised and updated edition, the verbs "bucket dipping" and "bullying" have replaced the nouns "bucket dipper" and "bully" to help readers understand that "bucket dipping" and "bullying" are negative behaviors (what we are doing) and not permanent labels (who we are). Readers will also learn that you can fill or dip into your own bucket.

I first learned about bucket filling in a seminar for early childhood educators in the 1990s. The speaker, a brain research expert, said it is helpful to think of every person as being born with an invisible bucket. The bucket represents a person's mental and emotional health. You can't see the bucket, but it's there. She said that it is primarily the responsibility of parents and other caregivers to fill a child's bucket. When you hold, caress, nurture, touch, sing, play, and provide loving attention, safety, and care, you fill a child's bucket. Giving that love is filling buckets.

In addition to being loved, children must also be taught how to love others. Children who learn how to express kindness and love lead happier lives. When you care about others and show that love by what you say and do, you feel good and you fill your own bucket, too.

As you read this book with children, use it as an opportunity to model this concept by filling their buckets. Tell them why they are special to you. Help them imagine whose bucket they might fill and what they could say or do to fill a bucket. Tell them whose bucket you filled that day. Practice with them to become daily bucket fillers. Very quickly they will experience the pride and joy of filling buckets.

Misses a major point

I found this book in a local bookstore where someone had left it on top of other non-related books. I flipped through it quickly and the messages I saw and the beautiful illustrations led me to make it an impulse buy.

When I read it to my daughter that evening, however, I found a major flaw in its premise. The book does a great job of creating the bucket analogy, but blatantly states that you need "others to fill your bucket". While it does circle back around to explain that filling the bucket of others (i.e. by being kind, helpful, etc.) can help fill the child's own bucket, I think it misses an important point - kids can fill their own buckets!

Unlike other reviewers, I didn't feel like it created co-dependence, but I do think it gives the message that a child needs the affirmation of others to have a full bucket. There is no mention of talking nicely to and about themselves, appreciating what they have, expressing gratitude for what they have, recognizing their own strengths and skills, seeing the beauty within themselves - all of which fill their own buckets.

I don't believe that one book will define a child, but this book certainly does loosely make the case for being approval and praise junkies - not a message I want my kid to take away from a book. It would have been a far better book if it had included the ways you can fill your own bucket, because there are times in life when that is the only way your bucket is going to get filled. And it would be a far better skill to have than waiting around for someone else to fill your bucket!!

Personally, I told my daughter flat out that the author made a mistake and we discussed all the ways one can fill their own bucket. Because of the beautiful illustrations and the springboard for the discussion, I left it at three stars. But I would not recommend this book to any parent unless they are willing to have more in-depth conversation about it.

Okay, but not as good as "How Full Is Your Bucket? For Kids"

I had been looking for books I could use to teach my students about treating others kindly. I bought this book along with the book, "How Full Is Your Bucket? For Kids." I was hoping it would have many suggestions of how kids can be "bucket fillers" by being kind to others and themselves. Unfortunately, it is more like a 2nd rate version of "How Full Is Your Bucket? For Kids." This book EXPLAINS the bucket concept and TELLS kids how their actions affect others, whereas "How Full Is Your Bucket? For Kids" is an engaging story that SHOWS children what the bucket concept is all about and DEMONSTRATES how their actions can hurt or help others. I love "How Full Is Your Bucket? For Kids" and intend to read it to my students, as I think it will be an effective teaching tool. Having purchased that book, this book is superfluous, and although I'll include it in my classroom library, I'm wishing I had spent the money on something else.

This is one book every elementary teacher should have. And one book each teacher should discuss with their children.

A literary masterpiece! If you are a fan of pomegranates and leather this book is for you. Offers deep insights into the lives of salesmen who ply their trade in the hot and saucy pots and pans industry. Belinda, as a new world wide sales director for a pots and pans company, has many experiences such as: The thorough interview process involved in sales, a Belgian department store magnate gives a good "tip" to securing business relationships "deep" within the "hedges" and among the benches of a maze, and a revealing look at Belinda's coercive sales tactics.

Makes for a great podcast

Came across this treasure in the podcast "My Dad Wrote a Porno." This is not exactly the genre I favor, but the podcast had me rolling in laughter, so I wanted to support the author. I highly recommend it. Excellent work Mr. Flintstone!

You owe it to yourself to read this riveting (pun intended - sorry, you have to read the book) account of one woman's adventures in the pots and pans industry (which we all know is the sexiest of industries). Part erotic adventure, part business primer and part (wildly inaccurate) anatomy lesson, this book has it all.
