Professor Abraham Van Helsing in the Wild West! What more could one ask for?

I'd been meaning to get around to reading one of Ed Erdelac's books for quite some time, when this advance review copy came my way. I'd already bought all three of his 'Merkabah Rider' series, but hadn't yet found the time to get to them.
Professor Abraham Van Helsing in the Wild West! What more could one ask for?
Seriously, not much! This excellent novel follows Van Helsing as he travels to Texas to deliever the ashes of Quincy P. Morris to his brother Coleman.
On the way, he meets a beautiful Greek lady, who is en route to join her fianc�, a neighbouring Norwegian rancher. Relations are not good between the Morris' and the Norwegians and the fact that a mountain lion seems to be taking a dreadful toll on the livestock is not helping.
It's not long before it's not only cattle that are being killed and mutilated, and Van Helsing suspects the culprit is no mountain lion.
Brawling ranch-hands, a drunken newspaperman, a one-legged, one-handed, one-eyed, one-eared horse-trader and a native American shaman make up the numbers on Van Helsing's side. On the other, we have a group of giant Norwegian Odin cultists just for starters.
Edward M. Erdelac tells the story quite brilliantly in the same sort of journal, letters, newspaper article style as Dracula and in certain sections, cuss words are censored in exactly the same way we're used to seeing them in novels of the 19th century. Details like this add enormously to the feel of the book. He melds these stylistic concepts perfectly with those of the classic western tales.
I enjoyed this book immensely and was very pleased to note all the hints that were laid for possible future books. The occasional mention of "the Great Detective" especially intrigued me.

Van Helsing rides again!

As in the first Dracula film, where a nervous Van Helsing (portrayed by Edward Van Sloan) informs a terrified audience in a long-lost epilogue: "There really are such things as vampires!" it seems that Bram Stoker's collection of diary entries, newspaper clippings, letters and other epistolary devices just may have indeed been fact, not fiction! What if--? What if Professor Van Helsing, Count Dracula and the rest of the characters in Stoker's tome actually existed?

If we are to believe the basis for Terovolas: The Van Helsing Papers (compiled?) by Edward M. Erdelac and published by JournalStone, Professor Van Helsing not only existed, but had further, even more bizarre adventures after his legendary confrontation with the non-dead Count. In an assembled collection of diary entries, letters, journal writings, and newspaper clippings, Terovolas begins shortly after the events chronicled in Dracula and Van Helsing has just been released from his friend and physician's care at Dr. John Seward's Purfleet Asylum. Still suffering from recurrent violent fantasies and nightmares, Van Helsing volunteers to return the remains and personal effects of his friend and fellow adventurer, American Quincey P. Morris (killed in the pitched battle with the vampire lord) to the latter's hometown of Sorefoot, Texas. En route, Van Helsing encounters a lovely Greek woman named Madame Callisto Terovolas, who is engaged to Norwegian cattleman Sigmund Skoll. As Van Helsing meets Quincey's estranged brother Coleman Morris, he discovers that the Norwegian faction and the Texans are on the verge of a range war and that something wild and ferocious is slaughtering animals and men alike on the plains. Concerned for his own sanity, Van Helsing embarks on a wild and wooly mission to save the beautiful Greek woman from what he deduces is a diabolic cult as well as himself from his own shaky judgment.

JournalStone's edition of Terovolas is well-laid out, easy on the eyes, and well-proofed (of course, the journal/diary entries of those concerned are preserved here, even with spelling, grammatical or syntax peculiarities). The cover art by M. Wayne Miller (design by Denise Daniel) is a nice wrap-around piece and is evocative and compelling.

It is quite fortuitous that Erdelac would be the one who accidentally discovered this particular treasure trove of information originally compiled by Dr. Seward; Erdelac is himself a gifted storyteller and has demonstrated a brilliant conversance with certain wild West antics (if seemingly fictitious), as evidenced by his works including the mind-blowing and richly textured Merkabah Rider series and Buff Tea, among other works brimming with late nineteenth century Americana, authenticity, action and adventure. Thanks to Erdelac and Sewards' clever assemblage of documents, the reader is here treated to a fast-paced, exhilarating adventure filled with colorful, compelling characters, scary, harrowing battles, historical detail and heart-felt emotion. The melting pot nature of the American West in the 1890s is colorfully brought to bear, with a complex amalgam of Norse mythology, Native American mythology, European religion and superstition. Toward the stunning denouement, a couple of important, but slightly long expository entries slow the pace somewhat, but certainly this is a minor detail in an otherwise exciting tale rich with strikingly authentic details. Believe the captivating contents as you will, but by the end of compiler Erdelac's closing remarks, you will certainly want to read further adventures of Professor Van Helsing and you will undoubtedly ask yourself,

"What if--?"

I received this book through Librarything's Early Reviewer Program.

Terovolas takes you to Sorefoot, Texas in the year 1891 & brings back the great paranormal hunter Abraham Van Helsing. A simple quest to return a dear friends ashes to his homeland turns into something much more frightening (and intriguing to Van Helsing).

The story had me enthralled. I am a lover of Dracula and Van Helsing stories, so I knew I would enjoy this. There was plenty of action with very descriptive passages. Even though I knew who/what was responsible for the attacks, it came in a sort of twist I didn't see coming.

I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5 only because it was taken from somebody else's idea. It's a great addition to the Van Helsing story. But original characters and storyline would have received 5 stars from me. I do recommend that anyone who enjoys paranormal stories should read this one.

Enhance Your Favorite Foods and Drinks with Fresh Brew

Cookbooks are plentiful and every household has at least one stashed away in the kitchen drawers, usually pulled out only when someone in the family feels like being creative. General, comprehensive cookbooks are common, but cookbooks that focus on specific ingredients are often the most fun and a good example is Cooking with Coffee, a guidebook to making beverages and foods enhanced with your favorite roasted brew.

I don’t normally cook, but I do like coffee and when I heard about this book, it did pique my interest. The main reason is because, well, I hadn’t heard of a cookbook that focused on coffee as an ingredient. It shouldn’t be surprising that someone thought of this, given the vast number of flavored coffees available. But this is the first one I had ever seen so I took advantaged and accepted an offer to read and review the book.

Cooking with Coffee is a nicely illustrated and instructive guide. Almost every recipe includes a full color photograph complete with an introduction to each recipe, a thorough list of ingredients, and easy to follow instructions. The majority of the recipes are simple, but there are some more complicated ones, too. I’m not much of a cook and I love beverages, so the first section to which I turned was the one for drinks and smoothies. Beverages don’t require much culinary skill and are usually easy to make, so this section seemed like the best one for me. And I did find some really good recipes here, like peanut butter mocha smoothies and homemade Irish cream.

Looking at the recipes as a whole, you will find that some call for freshly brewed coffee, others call for coffee grounds. It’s up to you to decide which flavor of coffee to use, and this is where the fun comes in. A recipe’s overall taste can change drastically just by switching to a different coffee and when you consider the large number of different flavors and styles of coffee on the market, there is virtually no limit to the number of recipes in this book because most any flavor can be substituted. My peanut butter mocha smoothie, for example, tastes very different when prepared with French roast coffee than it does when prepared using vanilla coffee and this is what keeps a recipe book like this interesting.

One thing about this book everyone should know is that it limits itself to sweets, drinks, sauces, and other basics. When I think of how complex and crafted coffee has become, I can’t help but wonder if the author has another book in store, one that focuses on gourmet foods, meat dishes, full meals, etc. Lots of food dishes could be compatible with coffee as an ingredient and it will be interesting to see if the author of this book continues down the java recipe road.

Coffee has evolved into an interesting beverage and Cooking with Coffee is a nice way to enjoy your favorite brew in ways you may have never imagined. It’s a good gift for the coffee fiend and it’s a great way to further enjoy the many great taste sensations imparted by adding a good cup of coffee to dessert foods and drinks.

Coffee and Cooking? Really 2 favorite things!!!

I received my book today and am SO excited to start making some of these recipes. And although the Salted Toffee Ricotta Toast is on the menu tomorrow morning, I couldn't resist making a very quick Coffee Caramel sauce to put on my scoop of ice cream tonight. A-MAZ-ING! The coffee added a depth to my lovely caramel craving!

I Don't Drink Coffee, But...

I am not a regular coffee drinker. I do enjoy the flavor of coffee, though... I simply prefer drinking tea. That said, I love the recipes in this book! Each one I have made has been delicious. I had no idea that coffee could add such a wonderful depth of flavor and complexity to food. To be able to elevate the taste of standard fare with a relatively inexpensive household staple -- coffee -- is an idea whose time has come. So glad the author decided to devote an entire book to cooking with this ingredient. I highly recommend it!
