This book is just not what I expected it to ...

This book is just not what I expected it to be. I thought I will learn about each leap babies are going through , at what time they happen and what to expect during these periods. However, it is mainly about the description of babies habits, sleeping, crying pattern. I just didn't learn anything and this is why I am only giving 2 stars to this book. I suppose this might help when you don't have a baby yet.

This is the exquisitely tender story of a love that beats desperately against the taboos of Oriental tradition. With great sensitivity and lyricism, Gibran describes his passion as a youth for Selma Karamy, the beautiful girl of Beirut who first unfolded to him the secrets of love. But it is a love that is doomed by a social convention which forces Selma into marriage with another man.

Portraying the exalted happiness and infinite sorrow of his relationship with Selma, Gibran at the same time probes the spiritual meaning of human existence with profound compassion. And he does so in a poetic prose that has magic and majesty.

Beautiful, Redolent and Insightful

Broken Wings is a simple story which serves as a canvas for Kahlil Gibran's flights of beautiful prose and philosophical insight. Gibran's prose is simply redolent with images. His evocative narration paints pictures with words which both took me away and taught me. Gibran's point is so much more clear and simply arresting for the crispness of his imagery, such as when he writes: "Those ample treasure chests that the energy of the father and the thrift of the mother fill up are transformed into dark, narrow prison cells for their heirs. That mighty deity whom the people worship in the form of money metamorphoses into a horrifying demon who tortures the people and kills the heart." (p.51)
There were several thoughts of Gibran's that I found similarly significant. In talking about the blossoming of love, Gibran writes that love is not "born of long association and unbroken companionship." Instead, he writes, it is "the daughter of a spiritual understanding, and if that understanding is not achieved in a single moement, it will never be attained -- not in a year, not in a whole century" (p. 41). My limited experience leads me to believe precisely this. Likewise, I agreed with Gibran when he writes that "Limited love demands possession of the beloved, but infinite love desires only its own essence" (p. 97).
If Gibran has a fundamental message in Broken Wings, though, I think that it is surrounding the tension or balance between putting everything that we can into our love and our endeavors, and the need to contextualize that love or endeavor in such a way that it does not consume that which we are. Gibran's narrator struggles with this tension. He wants to spirit Salma away to a life of true love. He wants her to break her word to her father and follow her heart. Mostly, he doesn't want her to give up on their love. His defense of this course of action is passionate: "For the soul to experience torment because of its perseverance in the face of trials and difficulties is more noble than for it to retreat to a place of safety and calm. The moth that contines to flutter about the lamp until it burns up is more exalted than the mole that lives in comfort and security in its dark tunnel" (p.73).
The imagery is again evocative, and certainly, I think, speaks to me: if you are to pursue life, pursue it like the moth -- soaring to unimagined heights and experiences. Don't be a mole who attempts to prolong his life by simply hiding himself away -- but never really experiencing life. Live, don't simply preserve an unlived life. Such a good reminder for us.
Love (and any endeavor, I imagine) isn't always so black-and-white, though. Salma's understanding is deeper and more complicated: before even her emotions and her love, she places her commitment to her father and to her (unloving) husband. There is incredible power in her choosing integrity over running away to a love which Gibran paints as being the fulfillment of all of our hopes for love. There is some unspoken insight here about integrity and commitment, I think. It is, perhaps, part of the foundation of love itself, a necessary ingredient for its presence.

One day it is my dream to pay hommage to my great teacher of life, Khalil Gibran. And I would like to go to his grave site in Lebanon and have a copy of "The Broken Wings" to read for his spirit.I think that tears (under certain conditions) are a cleanser to the human soul, and no literature piece has ever moved me as much as Gibrans Broken Wings. If there is ONE book that I will recommend, let it be the "Broken Wings". May Gibrans wisdom, art, passions, and art accompany you for the rest of your life.

Love, the source of eternal bliss and spirituality!

Gibran says, "I was eighteen years of age when love opened my eyes with its magic rays and touched my spirit for the first time with its fiery fingers and Selma Karamy was the first woman who awakened my spirit with her beauty and led me into the garden of high affection, where days pass like dreams and nights like weddings."

In his typical lyrical prose, interlaced with subtle imagery and deep philosophy, Kibran creates a masterpiece of first love. The story is poignant, and is full of platonic ideals, so characteristic of first love, especially in the East. I say so, as in the East, be it South Asia or the Middle East, first love is a cherished territory where spirituality overwhelms every idea of sexuality. The prose is delightful in content as well as intent, and is laced with a wisdom, so reminiscent of his most famous work, the Prophet.

Gibran always wrote short novels, and this one too is a short, but intense read. The sentences are rich with poetic descriptions, and the way author describes nature and love is refreshing, soothing, and beautiful.

I recommend Gibran to one and all. His writings may not appeal to you if you are looking for cheap thrills, but if you pine for a love story that defies the usual pot-broiler stuff, a love story full of purity and selflessness, read this one.

About the Author
Reginald Owen Morris was a British composer and teacher. He was born in York and was educated at Harrow School, New College, Oxford and the Royal College of Music in London, where he subsequently became professor of counterpoint and composition. Morris was considered a brilliant teacher of counterpoint, and wrote a number of influential texts on the subject. Students of Morris included composers Gerald Finzi, Sir Michael Tippett, Constant Lambert, Robin Milford, Anthony Milner, Edmund Rubbra, Bernard Stevens and Jean Coulthard.

This is a terrible text.

Terrible musical excerpts. There is such a large body of early music that could have been authentically used for these examples. It is much more effective and accurate if you "don't listen to what you are playing." The voice leading is at times not intuitive, and the explanations heading each section are lacking in clarity and depth. This publication is a miss for me, and my entire class.

If you know Volume 1 and you learned a lot from it or found it to be a valuable way to learn keyboard harmony- then you will enjoy this. Does not introduce as Mach new material as No. 1 but along the lines of of harmony found in a Bach chorale.

Dusty and Hannah....love love loved it!!!!

Could not wait to get my hands on this book! With the little snippet we got from the last Pistols book....I was excited to read more about Dusty and Hannah and what was going on between the two of them! Dust is the president of the Deadly Pistols MC and he's never thought about anything but the MC and even more so never thought he'd be settling down. Hannah is one of his club Brothers little sister, which makes her off limits and in a way forbidden. But whenever these two are around eachother ,it's hot.
War is coming for the Pistols while trying to take down a rival MC and that means Dusty needs his head in control.
Hannah hasn't been truthful with everyone about how she can live the lifestyle she does, and let me tell you the walls are closing in and it's not pretty.
When these two finally get together, they are explosive. But Hannah knows that staying will only bring harm to those she loves. Dusty stops at nothing to bring her home. I loved this book, and was not disappointed!!!! Great series....author knows her stuff with these MC books!!!

Never Wed an Outlaw by Nicole Snow....Get ready for an amazing ride, this one roller coaster of a ride that you can't get off, it holds you until the last word. This story keeps your turning pages and on the edge of your seat with suspense, crime, hot sex scenes, love, very hot bikers and fantastic characters . Nicole Snow is an author that knows how to suck you in and not let go. This is a must read, so make sure you buy it. I was given a complimentary book in exchange for an honest review.

Hannah has it all the brains the mansion the dream job and a life free of childhood drama or so it seems.... what the people who love her don't know is that she made a deal with the devil himself to get it and has been paying the price ever since. Dom is the Mafia leader that loaned Hannah the money to start her dream company and he is asking for miracles in money laundering that Hannah isn't sure she can pull off or he is threatening to kill her and everyone she loves. Dusty is Hannah's brother's best friend and MC president and she has had a crush on him for years but when things start to get steamy between them she tries to push him away because she is afraid to get close to anyone with the threat of Dom over her head. When Dusty finally breaks down her walls and they form a relationship he comes home one night to find two of Dom's thugs in the house with Hannah and ends up killing them and demanding to know the truth which Hannah is only too happy to finally reveal to the man she loves. Dusty and Hannah get married and things seem to be going fine until Dom tries to have her abducted and she runs scared for 7 months until Dusty and the MC find her at the same time that Dom and his thugs do while she is in labor with a baby no one knew about. The suspense and the fast pace of this novel are amazing and unable to resist absolutely loved it!

About the Author
Saul Alinsky was born in Chicago in 1909 and educated first in the streets of that city and then in its university. Graduate work at the University of Chicago in criminology introduced him to the Capone gang, and later to Joliet State Prison, where he studied prison life.�
�
He founded what is known today as the Alinsky ideology and Alinsky concepts of mass organization for power. His work in organizing the poor to fight for their rights as citizens has been internationally recognized. In the late 1930s he organized the Back of the Yards area in Chicago (the neighborhood made famous in Upton Sinclair's The Jungle). Subsequently, through the Industrial Areas Foundation which he began in 1940, Mr. Alinsky and his staff helped to organize communities not only in Chicago but throughout the country. He later turned his attentions to the middle class, creating a training institute for organizers. He died in 1972.

very good for being courageous to print it

very good for being courageous to print it. Awful, terrible, terrifying as to the theories, applications, planning of hateful political indoctrinating ideas, policies and actions. A great warning against tactics employed to brainwash populations and achieve super control over every aspect of peoples' lives. Deja-vu as far as previous Germany and Russia/cf. Hitler/Lenin/Stalin, Mao, et al. Warning, Warning, Warning!!! Once one falls into the traps posed by these "Rules", it is almost impossible to get out of it again. Looking back at history, it can make you sick to see that it is being tried all over again.
Kudos for the courage to publish it as a warning.

the more things change the more they stay the same

For its time, this is a pretty good guide on how to evoke change. I disagree with a lot of the actions he recommends, but I found it interesting that his take on the middle class in 1971 is how the middle class views its role in 2015. Prior to hearing about Alinsky a couple of years ago, I knew very little about him. When I bought this book I wasn't looking for a guide to change society but rather to get a perspective on how a radical thinks. There are a lot of similarities in his thoughts and actions and the thoughts and actions of some politicians today. It reads like a textbook and is pretty dry. I found it hard to stay awake and it took me quite a while to finish it.

Conned by ridicule and other rules.

I remember childhood when one of the worst things that could happen to me was ridicule, which is front and center in these rules. I was glad to become an adult when I could earn and keep respect of others. And now this book shows how childish behavior can tear down respect. Well, good for them. But understanding the mechanics and motivation of ridicule and of the other rules so clearly explained, I am not so easily conned by what those actions represent.

A wealth of information, yet extremely poor presentation

This was one of the most frustrating textbooks that I have ever read, and getting through it was a chore. While the editors had a difficult challenge of trying to present a ton of information, and while there truly is a wealth of quality information in this book, the presentation of this content is extremely poor and makes for difficult learning. The authors/editors took relatively simple training philosophies (which are well-established and proven, by the way), and made them complex and presented them in a confusing manner. Some of the deficiencies of this text include:

• The text is very rough and redundant, where notes and sentence are mentioned multiple times within the same section or chapter, though with slightly different words. In fact, you can tell which chapters the editors wrote based on the structure and content of the chapters and sections. I realize that the authors/editors want to drive home certain points, but using a more pointed writing style would have made the text more concise and understandable.
• Grouping and categorizing concepts would make reading and comprehension a lot easier. As it is now, this book reads like you are drinking from a firehose, where information is thrown at you with many different ideas at once, and with little structure behind it, and this is not ideal for learning.
• The material could be placed better within the book and chapters. Just as one example, muscle structure/function and neurophysiology could be placed in the chapter that covers anatomy, rather than in the chapter on flexibility.
• Some concepts or terms are not clearly defined in the text and they leave the reader with some ambiguity of their true meaning. This may be okay for gaining a general understanding, however, it is insufficient for taking an exam with these concepts and terms.
• Figures and flowcharts that are not explained, nor are they intuitively understood (e.g., lines or arrows connect boxes or concepts with no intuitive or true connection), and this could be confusing to the reader.
• While this is a small annoyance, the videos online for this course do not match the numbers of the chapters in the book. While the videos are informative and more concise (and are very useful by that notion), the visual content and animations are distracting and arbitrary.

If I did not have background knowledge in strength and conditioning and in the concepts that were presented, and if I only had this book to go by, I would be utterly confused after completing the book, and I would not feel that I could confidently deploy the training strategies. I read this book to complete an NASM certification, but this book would not be a go-to reference or text that I would recommend.

What is there to read has a nice flow to it so you don't get bored, however, there are a ton of pictures of the actual movements which is great also! As it is a book for class, it's not as fun as if it was something I just want to keep as reference.
