Had it not been for Graziella, “Les Confidences” of Lamartine might never have been published. Many years after this Italian romance of his youth as late as 1843 Lamartine went into retreat on the island of Ischia to write his “History of the Girondists.” He was in sight of the isle of Procida where Graziella had lived and he had loved, and his hours of recreation were passed under the shade of a lemon tree, writing out the recollections of this charming episode. It was while he was thus engaged one day, that his friend, Eugene Pelletan, surprised him with a visit. Pelletan was curious to know what Lamartine was doing, and the latter, on the impulse, read him a few pages from his journal. Pelletan was much moved at the recital, and, when he returned to Paris, told a publisher of that city he might make his fortune if he could secure these recollections of Lamartine’s youth. The following Autumn, when Lamartine had returned home, he received a letter from the publisher offering him any price he would name for his journal. Though the improvident author was then in embarrassed circumstances, he declined the offer. Some years before, he had purchased the estate at Milly on borrowed money, that he might die in the old homestead. He was now forced to part with a portion of it. A week after the first offer for the Recollections, came another letter from Paris importuning their publication. The second letter was received at the moment a notary was drawing the deed for the sale of the Milly estate; Lamartine was in a humor to accept any alternative rather than part with the house hallowed by so many sacred associations. He seized the deed from the table, tore it in fragments, and wrote to the Paris publisher: “I accept.” Omitting a brief sojourn in Rome, this little volume includes all of Lamartine’s first visit to Italy from the time he left his home at Milly,—a hamlet nestling in the valley of the Saone, on the road from Macon to the old abbey of Cluny, where Abelard died. He was traveling with a relative who was called to Leghorn on business, and it was intended that he should return home from there; but his strong desire to see Rome and Naples induced him to write to his father for permission to visit those cities. He was then but eighteen years old. Having written, he resolved to preclude disobedience by going without waiting for a reply. “If the refusal comes,” he said, “it will come too late. I shall be reprimanded, but I shall be forgiven; I shall return, but I shall have seen.” His impressions of Rome were vivid and his descriptions singularly picturesque, but as they are not pertinent to the story of Graziella they are omitted, thus offering alone what he has himself called “that mournful and fascinating presentiment of love.”

A Gem In The Genre of First Love Story

This is a reprint of the Book "Graziella: A Story of Italian Love" originally published by Jansen, McClurg & Co in 1886. It was written by the French poet, historian and statesman Alphonse de Lamartine (1790 - 1869) in an autobiographic account of his travel to Italy at the age of eighteen and how he met a young girl, Graziella, who fell in love with him. It captured masterfully the longing and agitating hearts of young lovers in immortal prose in a confessional fashion in which the vague impulses of youth so beautiful in their madness, the anguish of longing, unbearable hurt, and breathtaking joy of loving pervaded every line of the story. The book was originally written in French and was translated into English by James B. Runnion.

The story began in spring of 1808, when Lamartine went to Naples where he met a young Frenchman of about his ages, Avmon de Virieu, to whom he had attached a life-long friendship. Lamartine and his friend were very fascinated with the life of the fishermen of Posilippo. They resolved to form a closer acquaintance with these fishermen and eventually joined an old fisherman, Andrea and his grandson, Beppo whom they met at the beach of Margellina by offering the old fisherman to be his oarsmen in exchange for going fish with them. On a stormy day in September, they were forced to sail to the nearby Procida, where Andrea's wife and his granddaughter, Graziella, Beppo's sister, and two other little brothers were living in a house on the cliff.

Graziella - "her eyes, large and of oval shape, were of that undecided color between deep blue sea and darkest black, which tones down the natural radiance by a certain softness of expression and unites in the woman's eye the gentleness of her soul and the force of her passion in about equal proportions, the kind uniquely possessed by Asian and Italian women. They were borrowed from the brilliant light of their fiery days and from the serene blue of their heaven, their sea, and their night. Her checks were round, full and plump, with a natural pale complexion, but a little browned by the climate, resembled the color of marble exposed for centuries to the air and sea. Her mouth, with slightly full and larger lips than those of our women, had the characteristic lines of frankness and goodness. Her teeth, small and shining, sparkled in the fluttering light of the torch like the shells of pearls glistering at the bottom of a wave under the ray of sun."

When the family returned to Margellina for the winter Lamartine opted to stay again with the family in Margellina instead of going home with his friend. "I should have gone back with him. I don't know what charm of isolation and adventure kept me. Life on the sea, Andrea's little house, image of Graziella, may all had something to do. But the unrestrained freedom, passion for the mysterious and longing for the undiscovered, the ethereal perspective of young imaginations counted for more."

For the next three months, he lived as a member of the Andrea family. The affection between him and Graziella grew naturally as they were both of the age longing for love. For Graziella, it was her first love, deep, passionate and pure. Her hope was to keep him close to her while worried about someday he would leave her. For Lamartine, it was a brotherly love, he was immensely happy with Graziella. He taught her to read and write and knew in his heart that Graziella lived only on the existence of him, without him there was no meaning of life in her

"This was not love; I felt neither the palpitation, the jealousy nor the absent-mindedness of passion. This was the delicious repose of the heart instead of a fever of the soul and senses. I did not want to love her in other way, nor to be loved more. I did not know if she was a companion, a friend, or a sister to me, all I knew was that she and I were happy when we were together."

The emotional awakening of the heroine in love for the first time in her life and the belated emotional awakening of the hero to the fact that the irrevocable has happened, formed the peak of the story. Then the hero wavered, and let the happiness slipped. He only came back to mourn the loss of it with deep regret.

"I was at that ungrateful age when spirit of levity and fashion makes a young man ashamed of the best sentiments of his soul, a cruel age when the grandest gifts of God, pure love and innocent affections, fall in the dust and are carried away in their bloom by the wind of the world."

"Ah! One who is too young cannot understand the value of love. He knows the value of nothing. He can not appreciate true happiness until after he has lost it." "True love is the ripe fruit of the lifetime. At eighteen years one does not know it; one only imagines it. I have often thought about it since I have been able to count the gray hairs in my head. I blamed myself for not appreciating the preciousness of her love. I had only vanity, which is among the worst of all our vices. I even blushed when happiness knocked on my heart."

Beautifully and poetically written, I would have been happy to read 100,000 pages of such tender and heart wrenching words.

An Impressionable Woman's Unexpected Opportunity of a Lifetime

Norma Sheridan grew up in a household where, while they never went without, they never really had a lot of extra money either. Raised by a woman she calls Aunt Kate, the actual relationship between them is vague. Kate's children, Wolf and Rose, are Norma's closest friends.

At age nineteen Norma is taken under Marianna Melrose's wing, now to be called Aunt Marianna. Her new family includes Marianna's daughters, Alice and Annie along with their families and a granddaughter, Leslie who is close in age to Norma.

Norma finds herself living in a world with servants, piles of new clothes, and a high society lifestyle she's only dreamed of. She has mixed feelings about her new life. Sometimes she's thrilled with the opportunity, other times she can objectively see some of the people around her as being snobbish. She feels inadequate and undeserving of her new status until her Aunt Alice's husband Chris accidentally lets it slip that Aunt Marianna is actually Norma's grandmother.

Norma spends a lot of time at Aunt Alice's home, and with Alice's husband, Chris. Alice had been injured years earlier and can't walk, so she rarely leaves the house. Chris, however has an extremely busy social life. An attraction grows between Chris and Norma, and she has to deal with the guilt she feels towards Alice.

Norma has the unusual opportunity to choose between two very different worlds of wealth and status or the one in which she grew up in. She also has to choose between two men who love her above everything. Throughout the story the mystery of her birth parents pulls her along to her destiny.

This is a beautifully written story filled with wonderfully drawn characters. It was originally published in 1921 and nicely portrays how the very wealthy and middle class people lived at that time. The Beloved Woman is part of Project Gutenberg and can be read at gutenberg.org, google books, or at openlibrary.org for free.

One of my all time favorites

I read this book for the first time over forty years ago. Kathleen Norris was my mother's favorite author at the time, so I would sneak her books into my room when she wasn't reading them. The characters and surroundings are always beautifully described, their personalities well developed and her old fashioned yet passionate romantic story lines are top drawer. The Beloved Woman is one of her finer works. I was anxious to read it again and have enjoyed every minute since I received it. My other favorites written by this author are "The Sacrifice Years", "Barberry Bush", "Treehaven" and "Passion Flower.

To be busy--to be needed--to be loved

This book was similar to another Norris title I've read, "Maiden Voyage," in that it concerns a young girl falling in love with an older, married man. In both cases, the man falls in love with the girl too, or at least says he does, and the reader is left to evaluate how real that emotion is and how worthy of the girl's regard the man really is. Because in both cases, the author shows us the man through the girl's dazzled eyes, and then slowly reveals a more three-dimensional character as the story goes on. That's not to say that either was a bad man, just that the author is skilled at delving into her character's point of view and making the reader see things through that character's eyes. In "The Beloved Woman," the heroine not only falls in love with the man, but also with his life as a wealthy man of society. Circumstances drop the heroine into his world and the story follows her as she is drawn into his privileged world and has to figure out for herself if it is better than the humbler life she left behind. I didn't like this book quite as much as "Maiden Voyage" but overall it was a very good read.

I wasn't prepared for this brutal, abusive story. I have read many books on child abuse and neglect, but no book has literally brought tears to my eyes. Heart breaking

Why are we still reading about children abused while "in care" ?

This well written book reminds us once again how very bad our systems are at taking care of those least able to take care or speak for themselves. I really do not think we have come that far since this story played out. Any time you have to depend on government for safety or well being there are problems. We so need to focus on education, the kind that starts in the home, starting with kindness and true regard for life. If we could do that, growing loving people who take responsibility in their world maybe we would stop growing the monsters who feed on death and destruction. Every teacher, neighbor, friend, clergyman, anyone spotting a situation that isn't quite right has a duty to not only report it but to make sure it is followed through on so that the lame excuse of " it fell through the cracks" can't be used ever again.

Good with a few minor issues

There are chunks in the book that I really like,others that held very little interest, and things I want to know more about. There are also things that I both loved and hated- as in the same thing falls into both categories for different reasons. It's not my favorite of the series and I can't say it really met expectations but it is worth getting in my opinion.

Positives:
Vlad not being in complete control. I really liked the struggle he had to go through and the slightly more vulnerable side you see because of it.
Veritas: For the little part she shows up for. I like her. Totally called it.
Ian: Beginning- when he shows up and the end of the book.
Easter Egg of Bones and Kat's cabin. That was kind of cool.
Lelia: More independent, confident, and in general stronger.

No so positive:
Only Lelia's viewpoint. I've had that complaint since the beginning so it's no surprise I have it with this one as well.
While I found some of the magical elements to the book interesting, there were chunks like the bar, I was rather meh about. The middle of the story in general was rather difficult for me.
Ian. I love Ian as a character. In every other book Frost has written where he's made an appearance, large or small, I have loved him. He's one of my favorite characters and there were parts that I liked-see positives. However, the middle section of all the introduction to magic stuff, etc, he just....I don't know. It just didn't feel right to me. Too over the top maybe. Beginning and End, Total Ian. Something about the middle though.
Lelia: Being more than a little hypocritical when it comes to Gretchen. She kicks up a storm when Vlad makes choices for her but she goes and mind wipes her sister. Even though the intention to protect is good it was wrong on many levels. I was applauding Maximus calling it out too though I wish he'f gonr a little further with it. She also got a little....self-centered, holier than thou. Not a lot but boy did it grate the nerves when it showed.
What the bad guys ultimately wanted: Made me want to bang my head into the wall a little bit. How Vlad handled it too.
Not much time with Samir. I liked him in the last book.
I liked Gretchen stepping up for Leila, liked Lelia wanting to protect her sister, didn't like Lelia mind zapping her, didn't like that Lelia was willing to let Gretchen do it in the end just to spare Vlad the heartbreak.

What I want to know:
All right, so Gretchen had no interest for me at all for the first two books. Book 3, I liked the small little bit of her and Samir. This book I actually really liked her and I now have a burning desire to know more. I want to know if her crying was about the thought of Samir being under threat Is there something there? Maximus seemed like a potential romance in some moments.
I am officially interested in Ian's story though I do hope we get his perspective, not just the Verita's. While similar to a previous story, I am interested to see how Frost makes the changes and expands. I hope he gets more than just one book.

One final note. This may have been addressed and I just missed it but, if the hex could be transferred to the blood relative, why not give Gretchen vamp blood, then transfer to Gretchen, Gretchen 'dies', then comes back as a vamp. It might be that the nature of the hex doesn't allow for it but I don't think it was ever considered, just that the transfer would have to wait if she was already a vamp so that it wouldn't be during the blood craze. Perhaps I'm forgetting something though.

Strong Finish to a Great Series

Writing a sequel is inherently tough. It is difficult to top the thrill of meeting new characters in the first book in any series. Frost has pulled it off admirably.

This is a plot driven romance that wraps up the previous adventures featuring Mencheres and Ian as the main secondary characters. Vlad has always been a fabulous anti-hero and continues in this story. Leila is at her best; to the point that it is the first time I felt she was a worthy partner for Vlad. We learn more about Ian who for all his apparent superficiality, is an incredibly complex character. I'm not too proud to admit to having teared up a couple of times. There were some great plot twists and revisits with familiar characters. While this is the end of Vlad's story featuring him as the main character, there will be more related books coming.

My only complaint is that there could have been a few more steamy scenes. The sign of a great book was that I felt like going back to the beginning of the series and starting all over. Kudos to Ms. Frost for hundreds of hours of reading pleasure.

Worth the wait

I've waited so long for this book, and I'm so pleased to say I wasn't disappointed. This book was a roller coaster of emotion from start to finish, gripping the reader tighter and tighter with every turn of the page. Honestly this has to be my absolute favorite book written in my favorite series. Though I am sad this series has come to an end, I am satisfied with the end. There are a few unanswered questions, which I hope to see answered in future books. Have tissues ready, and be prepared to laugh one moment, and cry the next. Thank you, Jeaniene Frost, for giving us this beautiful gift!

Good book for the skeptic

Excellent book. The author does a great job of citing all kinds of sources pertaining to all the claims.

He presents the evidence available on certain cases, and draws conclusions from what's available. Don't let the fact that its written by a priest deter you. He is very objective. This is the most in-depth book available on the subject.

(Montague Summers has a book by the same title, but I believe it is different. Don't confuse the two.

Interesting read

I read this book because it was referenced in another book I was reading about incorrupt saints. The author (a priest) covers incorrupt saints as well as stigmatics, ecstasies, etc. One of the most fascinating things to me was about people who consumed nothing other than the Holy Eucharist for years. Some were proven to be frauds, while others appear genuine. Very interesting.

BRILLIANT open-ended exploration linked through multiple books

I am delighted to see this series back in print! This book series evokes the same feeling in me as do sandbox-style computer games like Morrowind or Oblivion--done with captivating descriptions and an enchanting storyline. Of all the gamebooks I've played, I find this series the most rewarding. Feels much, much more like a WORLD than a regular choose your own adventure book or other gamebooks do. (If anything, its combined text format and vast openness of play echo the good old days of text adventure games from Infocom like Zork and Enchanter.) I'm buying multiple copies as gifts for friends this Christmas to help ensure that all twelve books come out!

It's like an MMORPG in a book

I'm glad to see the Fabled Lands series in re-print. With eBay as my primary expensive source of replacement for my over-used, drink-stained, eraser-ridden, original copies, I became hesitant to open up my old books. Now that they are back, I didn't hesitate to scarf them up off of Amazon.

This book series really shines when you have more than one, since they are all connected areas of the same world. It is much more than any typical "Choose Your Own Adventure" book in that you are free to roam the world at your leisure. There aren't many gamebooks that fit this bill. Tunnels & Trolls solitaire adventures are the closest I can recall. Completing quests, leveling up, finding treasure, hunting monsters, getting rich with trade, arranging a resurrection (i.e. respawn/binding point), and changing the local plot hooks make the Fable Lands feel like an MMORPG in a book.

One of the great things about this first book is that it already presents you with quite a lot of quests that can be completed without any of the other books, and at least one of these is directly related to the future of that land. It's also a fairly sizable kingdom to explore that won't always instantly kill your character out right, though this could still happen. A great introduction to the series that gives you plenty to do and experience in all areas of gameplay. The replay value is extremely high since there are multiple character classes to play, each having their own unique quest, and there are so many events and locations that could be missed whether your character dies or not. This book is really inexpensive, so I recommend buying the rest of the series when they become available.

A chance to collect all the books!

I remember back as a teenager my brother and I were spending a couple of weeks in Ireland with our mother's family. In a book store we were all offered the chance to choose one book each. My brother and I both chose volumes 1 and 2 of the "Fabled Lands" series. It was both a wonderful and a poor choice. Wonderful because Patrick and I spent the next couple of days glued to the couch with pencils and dice and enjoyed hours of exploration... only feeling disappointed when we got to a point that gave us the option of jumping into some of the other books we hadn't purchased. So why did I say these books were a poor choice? My mother and uncle had to leave my brother and I at home. We refused to go out and enjoy the Irish countryside and beaches because we'd have to pry ourselves away from these books! In retrospect I wish I'd saved the books until we got back to the states to start. *Laughs* That said, my only complaint was that the books were too good to put down. Once we got back to the States we were unable to find copies of the series (in the pre amazon/internet) days. Finally my brother and I will be able to buy more of the books and enjoy the rest of the game worlds. Please show support for the series by purchasing the first few volumes of the series so that the rest of it will be either re-released... or in the case of later books in the series that were planned, but cancelled before ever being printed, printed for the first time! If you are a gaming parent who has children who enjoy Choose-Your-Own-Adventure style books, this is the perfect next step in their gaming initiation.

Chan S. Park is currently a Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Auburn University. He received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in industrial engineering from Purdue University and the Georgia Institute of Technology, respectively. Over his 25-year academic career, he has been actively involved in a variety of areas of research, teaching, and professional consulting. His work has been recognized internationally in the fields of engineering economics, strategic and economic decisions within service sectors, financial engineering (real options valuation), risk analysis, and capital budgeting. He also authored or coauthored leading textbooks on the related subjects, including Contemporary Engineering Economics (Prentice Hall), and Advanced Engineering Economics (John Wiley & Sons). He is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal The Engineering Economist and is a licensed Professional Engineer.

Two Stars

The problems ARE NOT the same in the paperback internatinal version as the hardcover version.

Pretty good engineering economics book. Clear with the presentation of the topics, but some of the examples aren't as clear as they need to be. Overall very helpful.
