Unique tale of darkness and light

Nurse Annie Mitchell and her new husband Keith are called away from their honeymoon as a precautionary measure, little dreaming that they will be caught up in WWII's bloody Battle of the Bulge. An impulsive mission to rescue Keith goes awry, leaving Annie's friend Mouse dead. Before Keith and Annie can make it back to the American lines, he is killed and she is captured. Annie's only thought is escape from the wounded German soldier who shot her husband, but the enemy's behavior begins to threaten her preconceived notions. Could a murdering Nazi actually have compassion?

A gripping story beautifully told. Building on the success of his previous WWII novels, Cavanaugh crafts a unique tale of the darkness and light struggling in Europe during that time. He delves deeply into the lives of his two primary characters, bringing their emotions and motivations to the surface, especially Annie's complex struggle. The skillful plot matches the characters and never seems contrived, though the ending leaves readers wanting another chapter or two. Nurse Annie Mitchell saw firsthand the atrocities of war and concluded that the German soldier was inhuman and thoroughly depraved. But when a rogue rescue mission ended in tragedy, a bereft Annie finds herself a captured prisoner behind enemy lines in Belgium's Ardennes Forest. Her captor Karl Hausmann doesn't fit her stereotype of the brutal German soldier. In the days following her capture, Annie must reconsider everything she thought she knew about her enemy. Dear Enemy is as entertaining as it is thoughtful and thought-provoking reading. Jack Cavanaugh has once again demonstrated his mastery of engaged and engaging storytelling. terrific historical fiction

During World War II, American nurse Annie Rawlings married Keith Mitchell only to have their honeymoon canceled due to a mission need. Annie has worked with the dying and maimed and believes the Nazis and for that matter all Germans are evil deserving only death for the atrocities they have fostered on people.

A rescue mission behind enemy lines in Belgium fails leaving Annie held prisoner by a wounded German soldier Karl who killed her beloved Keith. As he keeps her safe she helps heal him and they forge camaraderie through a love of music and faith that God will save humanity. As they become more than friends, Karl is captured and becomes a POW. This should be the end of a war torn yet warm relationship, but Annie needs to at least know her Karl is safe so after the war ends she begins her search.

This is a terrific historical fiction novel that grips the audience with an opening paradox that sets the tone of a tale that uses irony and contradiction to tell a powerful human tale. The story line occurs during World War II in which the heroine loathes all Germans until she is forced into close quarters with the soldier who killed her spouse. Annie soon realizes he is a young caring nice man caught in the maelstrom of brutal misunderstandings by old men who send others to fight and die (history repeats itself). With a character driven anti-war message DEAR ENEMY peels away the armor to reach the souls of two foes leaving the inside for the audience to realize that we are human so let's give peace a chance.

Love baseball, then you'll like this book.

I bought the book as a gift to the library at the Boys and Girls Club of Dorcester, MA. I read the book first so I would be able to recommend it in good conscience. It started out a little slow but it quickly gained my interest. The book was interesting and easy to read. Any youngster who loves baseball would enjoy reading it. There was suspense and action and the main and supporting characters had real personality and spirit. The fact that the conclusion was TBD (to be determined) did not bother me in the least. I just hope the kids are as interested in reading the sequel as I am.

If only the undergraduate course I took used this book as the course book.

I taught an introductory undergraduate course on information theory to a small class with this book as the course book. While this book does not provide a basket full of lemmas and deep insight for doing research on quantifying information, it does what it aims to do flawlessly: provide a very accessible, lean, to-the-point and self-contained survey of the main theorems of information and coding theory. If only the undergraduate course I took back in the day had used this book as the course book.

This is a great introductory book. Other than some basic math you need no other background to get started with this book. It is an effective tool for learn information theory. The Authors take a "build from the ground up" approach. A lot of authors try to go straight to information and entropy and then talk about source and code languages. In my opinion, starting the other way around actually makes things clearer as to what the information content that you are studying is.

Incomplete proofs, very short solution to exercise questions (just a hint), too much back and forth between chapters and unexplained theorems. Unless you need this book for school, don't buy this book.

Not for beginners

The description for this book is a bit vague. It says, "Basic knowledge of Gradle or any other build tool is essential." What this seems to mean is that this book is not for Gradle beginners. It isn't. Much of the time, it is very much a hand-holding guide, but then it will suddenly make glancing references to topic that have not even been hinted at by the book.

The trouble is that there doesn't seem to be any kind of learning resource anywhere for the beginner. Gradle's online documentation is even worse (much worse) than this book at suddenly launching into advanced side topics.

There is good material in this book; I say that as someone who is still pretty new to Gradle. I wonder if my perception will change after I become more of an expert. In that case, maybe the content will seem too basic. For now, I'm learning things, but I still have frequent cases when I wonder what the heck the book is talking about. So I have to put those topics aside and assume I'll learn about them later. This is not the most pleasant or effective way to learn something.

I have been working with Gradle for about a year now, so I have some experience. I bought this book partly as a reference and partly as way to learn the what I don't know about Gradle. I have found this book to be a very good reference and I definitely appreciated the background information on Groovy. I will be recommending that we purchase this book for our team's library.

Of the several main contenders covering the diverse field, Tong's may be at once the most comprehensive and representative

Although I would agree that this text isn't a nail-biting page-turner, I have difficulty believing those reviewers who found the primary texts by the likes of Butler, Cixous, Irigaray so much livelier, more accessible and clear than Tong's explanations. Post-structuralist criticism, especially following upon the heels of French thinkers like Lacan and Derrida, became dense, esoteric, and difficult beyond the understanding of even many Ph.D.s with its specialist jargon and self-referential, seemingly private, inquiries/demonstrations into the limits and possibilities of human language. Feminist criticism--originally influenced heavily my male thinkers in the areas of structuralist, post-structuralist, post-modernist thought--was no different. In fact, its frequently recondite, difficult, and impenetrable prose led to many revolts by undergraduate women against feminist theory itself.

For this reason, Tong's book was especially valuable during feminism's heyday--an organized approach to the entire field as well as an accessible explication of the major, primarily female, feminist thinkers. Given the movement's declining influence as the 1990s came to an end, it was important that Tong came out with this new edition--not only to address developments since the 2nd edition--including the so-called "backlash"--but to serve as a reminder that even if feminist theory had lost much of its popularity and influence, it was still alive--and many of its most influential voices, if less heard from due to apathy and new priorities, were merely waiting to be rediscovered by later, intellectually curious students.

While there are always those who will deride "theory" (French theory, especially, has never been popular with American academics), thinking about what we normally do without thinking--in effect, thinking about thinking--is critical to the life of mind which, in a desperate world where only survival and political action count, becomes a "necessary luxury," a sure sign that all human actions and behavior aren't determined exclusively by the herd. Moreover, theory offers a useful paradigm, a structure, a conceptual framework for what would otherwise be an occasionally diverting but rather incoherent chorus of various, individual voices. The danger we face, especially since the downloading, piecing-out, and "atomizing" of texts by the many individual hyper-spatial "files" (fragments of what were once whole and complete works, albums, suites) is exactly the sort of disarray that theory seeks to organize and clarify--and to do so without "reducing" the original works and their authors to mere talking points and topic sentences in an overly broad, sweeping, homogenizing overview. Tong's strength is that she covers the field without misrepresenting its individual voices. The reader has every right to trust her and her carefully chosen words.

Purchased for a WMST class. Very, very dry. Hard to tell if the material or the way this was organized and written made it so dry, as a lot of feminist work is very interesting and dynamic. If used in a classroom setting, effective. If you're picking this up to learn about feminist theory for fun, I would reconsider.

Excellent intro to the many feminisms

This is the best source I've seen which defines the various feminisms (e.g. liberal, marxist, existentialist...) Tong describes the assumptions of each position and then presents supportive and opposing views. Her approach encourages the reader to consider the strengths and weaknesses of each position. Very balanced presentation with plenty of illustrative examples.
