About the Author

Danica G. Hays, PhD, LPC, NCC, is an associate professor of Counseling and Chair of the Department of Counseling and Human Services at Old Dominion University. She is a recipient of the Outstanding Research Award, Outstanding Counselor Educator Advocacy Award, and Glen E. Hubele National Graduate Student Award from the American Counseling Association as well as the Patricia B. Elmore Excellence in Measurement and Evaluation Award and President’s Special Merit Award from the Association of Assessment in Counseling and Education (AACE).

Dr. Hays served as Founding Editor of Counseling Outcome Research and Evaluation, a national peer-refereed journal of the AACE, and is Editor of Counselor Education and Supervision, a national peer-refereed journal of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. She served as President of the AACE in 2011-12. Her research interests include qualitative methodology, assessment and diagnosis, trauma and gender issues, and multicultural and social justice concerns in counselor preparation and community mental health. She has published over 75 articles and book chapters in these areas and coauthored or coedited these other books to date: Qualitative Inquiry in Clinical and Educational Settings (Guilford Publications), Mastering the National Counselor Exam and the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Exam (Pearson), and the ACA Encyclopedia of Counseling (American Counseling Association). Professor Hays is also co-editor of the upcoming text, A Counselor’s Guide to Career Assessment Instruments (6th edition, National Career Development Association). She has been a faculty member at Old Dominion University since 2006 and her primary teaching responsibilities are doctoral-level research methods courses, assessment, and clinical supervision.�

Bradley T. Erford, PhD, is a professor in the school counseling program in the Education Specialties Department at Loyola University Maryland. He was President of the American Counseling Association during 2012-2013. He is an American Counseling Association (ACA) Fellow, and the recipient of several ACA awards, including the Research Award, Extended Research Award, Hitchcock Distinguished Professional Service Award, Professional Development Award, and the Carl Perkins Government Relations Award. He has received the Association for Assessment in Counseling and Education (AACE) Exemplary Practices Award; Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) Robert O. Stripling Award for Excellence in Standards; and the Maryland Association for Counseling and Development (MACD) Maryland Counselor of the Year, Professional Development, Counselor Visibility, and Counselor Advocacy Awards.

Professor Erford’s research specialization falls primarily in development and technical analysis of psychoeducational tests and has resulted in the publication of numerous books, journal articles, book chapters, and psychoeducational tests. He is a past chair of the ACA, Southern Region; past president of the AACE, the MACD, the Maryland Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (MACES), the Maryland Association for Mental Health Counselors (MAMHC), and the Maryland Association for Measurement and Evaluation (MAME). Dr. Erford is the past chair of the ACA Task Force on High Stakes Testing, Task Force on Standards for Test Users, Public Awareness and Support Committee, Bylaws Committee, and Interprofessional Committee. A Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, Licensed Professional Counselor, Nationally Certified Counselor, Licensed Psychologist, and Licensed School Psychologist, he teaches courses primarily in the areas of assessment, human development, research and evaluation, school counseling, and stress management.

Where is Text-to-Audio Feature?

Let me clearly state: my single star rating has NOTHING to do with the content of this textbook.

However, I would give it NO STARS rating due to having made this ebook purchase and it failing to live up to the convenience which I would naturally expect from an ebook. Being able to easily use a text to audio format is an absolute must for digital content, in my opinion. I personally make these digital purchases to have listening material while I am doing other things like washing dishes, driving, etc.
I downloaded this first on my iPod and was unable to use the text to audio feature. I then downloaded this on my Macbook and was able to go through a process of copying the text of a single page at a time and using a key shortcut (option, esc) to have the highlighted text read. However, I know realize that the program considers this to be a copy/print feature and has warned that there is a limit to its use. I am in the second chapter! Also, copying a page at a time is rather inconvenient and not conducive to easily following the story or text.
This is more than an inconvenience. It is a waste of digital programming and I would have reconsidered the format purchase if I was aware of this issue.
Kindle - please ramp up your technology features so that purchases on any device may enjoy the use of text to audio.

Great book, very thorough

The author took great care when she wrote this book. It is very in depth in the study of each individual culture she touches on and the need for counselors to come with a open mind and clean slate when dealing with clients that are not of the same race or nationality in order to best serve them.

i found this book to be a little too racist against white people. Like, not all whites are priveledged and this book seemed to suggest it. I also wish that it would have pulled info from other chapters that were relevant to the topics being read.
I did really like all the interactive questions/reviews throughout each chapter- they were nicredibly helpful for the learning process

After receiving my undergraduate degree at Harvey Mudd College and my PhD from Caltech, I joined the Mathematics Department at Claremont McKenna College, where I have continued to teach, specializing in calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations. I love to write, and in addition to this text have written published texts on engineering calculus and linear algebra. My wife, Jaqui, and I are active supporters of recording textbooks for the blind and dyslexic. We also travel whenever we get a chance and especially enjoy cruising. Our favorite destinations have been Crete, Barcelona, and Singapore. I’m a lifelong Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Lakers, and USC Trojan football fan, and write science fiction novels in my spare time. We have two sons, a newborn grandson, and seven cats, although it’s not clear whether we have the cats or they have us. We also raise foster kittens for a local shelter until they are ready to be adopted, and yes, three of our cats are fosters that we could not resist adopting ourselves.

I was born and raised in Cleveland, and started college at Bowling Green State University in 1984 majoring in creative writing. Eleven years later, I walked across the graduation stage to receive a PhD in math, a strange journey indeed. After two years at Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania, I came home to Ohio, accepting a tenure-track job at the Hamilton campus of Miami University. I’ve won a number of teaching awards in my career, and while maintaining an active teaching schedule, I now spend an inordinate amount of time writing textbooks and course materials. I’ve written or co-authored either seven or twelve textbooks, depending on how you count them, as well as several solutions manuals and interactive CD-ROMS. After many years as developmental math coordinator at Miami Hamilton, I share the frustration that goes along with low pass rates in the developmental math curriculum. Far too many students end up on the classic Jetson’s-style treadmill, with the abstract nature of the traditional algebra curriculum keeping them from reaching their goals. Like so many instructors across the country, I believe the time is right to move beyond the one-size-fits-all curriculum that treats students the same whether they hope to be an engineer or a pastry chef. “Because we’ve always done it that way” is NOT a good reason to maintain the status quo in our curriculum. Let’s work together to devise alternate pathways that help students to learn more and learn better while hastening their trip into credit-bearing math courses. Since my book (Math in Our World) is written for the Liberal Arts Math and Quantitative Literacy market, I think I’m in the right place at the right time to make a difference in the new and exciting pathways course. I’m in a very happy place right now: my love of teaching meshes perfectly with my childhood dream of writing. (Don’t tell my publisher this – they think I spend 20 hours a day working on textbooks – but I’m working on my first novel in the limited spare time that I have.) I’m also a former coordinator of Ohio Project NExT, as I believe very strongly in helping young college instructors focus on high-quality teaching as a primary career goal. I live in Fairfield, Ohio with my lovely wife Cat and fuzzy dogs Macleod and Tessa. When not teaching or writing, my passions include Ohio State football, Cleveland Indians baseball, heavy metal music, travel, golf, and home improvement.

Michael Price is a senior instructor and assistant department head of mathematics at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. Both his undergraduate and graduate degrees are from the University of Oregon, where has worked as a graduate student and instructor for the last 9 years. Michael has taught courses in introductory and intermediate algebra, up through precalculus, statistics, and three variations of calculus aimed at, respectively, biology/human physiology, business/economics, and mathematics/physical science students. As a coordinator for the precalculus sequence at the U of O and periodically other sequences required for non-math majors, Michael spends a substantial portion of his time developing and reinforcing responsible course material for mathematics service courses. In addition to this textbook, he has also contributed to supplemental materials and reviews of undergraduate texts in mathematics.

Laurence D. Hoffmann November 2011 I consider myself to be a writer and expositor as well as a mathematician, and these traits led to the original version of this text published in 1975. Before assuming my current position as a Senior Investment Management Consultant with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, I was a tenured professor of mathematics at Claremont McKenna College, where, on three occasions, I was honored to be the recipient of the Huntoon Award for Excellence in Teaching, a “best-teacher” award determined by a vote of the students. In addition to my current profession and my ongoing involvement with this text, I serve on the Strategic Planning committee of the Claremont Community foundation and on the Investment Committee of the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Gardens in Claremont. My wife, Janice, and I love to travel, enjoy music and the arts, have two grown sons, three grandchildren and two Maltese dogs. I am an avid (but average) tennis player, am addicted to the Sunday Puzzle on NPR, and have been trying for several years to become fluent in Italian. Long ago, I received by BA in mathematics from Brown University and my Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin.

Great textbook! Combines Calculus with Business related applications.

This is a pretty great calculus book for those looking to go into the business field. In my college, it was required for our "calculus for the applied social sciences" class and so far I'm liking it. There are some great examples in there, nice graphs/pictures and is actually pretty cool with how they relate calculus to business applications. Very nicely done textbook.

Cathedrals Built by the Masons was featured in a full-page article in The Square, the Independent Magazine for Freemasons, in June 2016. "Russell Herner is a Freemason who loves cathedrals. He also knows a lot about them and this is obvious when you read his book. It is slightly larger than A4, some 240 pages and beautifully illustrated. The book has 14 chapters, appendices, glossary, and good references. It falls into three groups. Firstly, a collection of wonderful pictures of cathedrals. The second part is a description of how cathedrals were built and the tools that were used. The third is a resume of the transition from Operative to Speculative Masonry..."

About the Author
Russell Herner began researching cathedrals in 1969 and has collected primitive tools for over 50 years. He has been a Mason since 1962 and received the 33rd Degree in 1992. His two previous books are Stonehenge: An Ancient Masonic Temple and Antique Ice Skates for the Collector.

I highly recommend this book, even if you have no interest in Cathedrals. After reading the book, you will gain a tremendous appreciation for the design and construction of these magnificent structures. The book presents what would be considered complicated details in a manner that is easy to understand. You will feel as though Mr. Herner is giving you a personal tour, making sure you understand and learn through the diagrams presented. The many wonderful photographs bring his story to life. I have toured Europe, and visited several of the Cathedrals, and regret that I did not have the knowledge this book provides, prior to my visits.

About the Author
John Calipari is the head coach of men's basketball at the University of Kentucky. He led the Kentucky Wildcats to the 2012 national championship, and has been to a total of six Final Fours in his career, including four in a five-year period. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015. He lives in Lexington, Kentucky.

Michael Sokolove is a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine, as well as the author of the books The Ticket Out, Hustle, and Warrior Girls. He lives in Bethesda, Maryland.

Insights about helping people

Coach Cal shares his coaching insights, and his tips translate far beyond basketball. In fact, this is not a basketball book, or even a coaching book. This is a collection of stories about how to help talented people help themselves by helping others. He is right. We are here for a reason, and it is a leader's job to create self-awareness and nurture ownership for pursuing one's passion.

Excellent book. I work in the healthcare market in sales. Great business lessons, well written and I really liked reading about Coach Cal and the Kentucky basketball program. Before the book I was not a fan of the one and done aspect of College basketball and I now have a much better understanding of this along with a tremendous appreciation of how Coach Cal makes it work.

About the Author
E Brian Smith received his first degree and his doctorate at Liverpool University. After two years at the University of California, Berkeley, with Professor Joel H Hildebrand, he returned to become Lecturer in Physical Chemistry and Fellow of St Catherine’s College, Oxford. In 1988 he was appointed Master of St Catherine’s College. From 1993 to 2001 he was Vice-Chancellor of Cardiff University. His research interests include intermolecular forces and the biological effects of simple gases. In the latter area he has contributed to the understanding of the mechanisms of general anaesthesia, inert-gas narcosis and decompression sickness, and has been active in applying the results of his investigations to improving the techniques of deep-sea diving.

The Best Introduction

This book is the best introduction I have yet seen to the surprisingly challenging world of chemical thermodynamics. It could even be profitably studied by a newcomer to thermodynamics altogether. However, I still recommend Thermodynamics: An Engineering Approach with Student Resources DVD for the first exposure to the subject.

In less than 150 pages, this book carefully walks the reader through the basic essentials, and in my opinion one of the absolute highlights of this book is Table 5.2 on page 71 which gives the reader an excellent, high level overview of chemical thermodynamics. Even for the more experienced student of the subject, this book might be worthwhile just for this one table, and I can't understand why every book on the subject doesn't include such a table. It captures what would ordinarily take several pages of terse prose and condenses it into a form that is immediately digestible and extremely useful for reference.

Another review of this work criticizes the number of errors found in the fourth edition. I haven't seen the fourth edition, but I can say that this edition seems remarkably error free.

Highest recommendation to anyone with an interest in chemical thermodynamics.

Good coverage with lame logic

I borrowed the 4th edition of this book from the library, so it may not be applied for this 5th edition.
It covers wide range of basics of thermodynamics, requires readers only a entry-level chemistry knowledge, and contains only less than 200 pages, which makes people feel easier to read through.
Actually, chapters up to 3 are easy to follow and digest, but the following chapters made my eyes rolled over and over again.
The explanation is too short and the algebra employed are sloppy and lame.
Making things even worse, there are many typos, which I hope fixed in 5th.
It would be good for people who always doubt about things like me to deepen the knowledge, looking up the Internet, other books, or whatever, but not good for those who tend to believe things without doubt.
I found the thermodynamics written by Enrico Fermi is much better for the starters, even though it employs a little bit old way to express things like thermodynamic potential for the Gibbs free energy and the free energy for the Helmholtz free energy.

About the Author
After surviving the Vietnam War, Captain Bill Collier continued to have many adventures flying helicopters commercially all around the world. He flew almost every size and shape helicopter produced in the U.S. from the smallest “whirlybird” to the largest CH-53 “Jolly Green.” His last position was flying the UH-1 “Super Huey” for the Orange County Fire Department in Southern California. He also flew the French-built Alouette III. In 2008, Captain Bill retired to the small, peaceful town of Sandpoint, in the Idaho panhandle. He keeps himself busy writing about his 32 years of helicopter flying. He is a life member of several veterans organizations. He is already at work on additional books from his lifelong experiences in flying helicopters.

That "old dog" could really fly

A great read about a great helicopter. That "OLD DOG" could do many things and still get the crew back for a good "cold one". Capt. Bill's accounts of the harrowing situations that he had were not uncommon for all of the pilots serving in Viet Nam. Sure brought back lots of memories.

I never thought I would be able to read a book about Viet-Nam. This book entertained me, enlightened me, and allowed me to explore parts of my own experience in "the Nam" that I avoided. I actually enjoyed this book and am going to pursue some of my buried recollections now. Thanks Captain Collier.

Quick Guide indeed!

Very helpful in organizing all my tasks especially with my current work as I am constantly asked to do new tasks when I am not even done with the rest. I liked how organized everything is now thanks to this quick guide! The discussion about GTD (Getting Things Done) and sorting out tasks before you've even began to weed out the unnecessary to the ones that can be done in 2 minutes or otherwise delegate was extremely helpful. I also did not realize the clutter it causes when I put everything into a calendar. Now my calendar looks neat and I don’t stress about deadlines. Never new OneNote could be so helpful in delegating tasks and I can add just about anything to my documents and files which is saves me the hassle of finding the needed files later.

Ultimate Is an understatement!!

Holy One Note!! So like some people before becoming a business owner, I never utilized half of the things on my PC, esp. OneNote. Thank goodness for Jack Ecko and this User Guide because I was drowning in invoices and sticky notes not to mention all my crazy list. Now Im 100% organized and I have this book to thank!! My favorite part was it was user friendly, never did I have to go back and read something a million times to understand it. I would recommend.

Okay so I have had one note in my comp for as long as I can remember and never once have I touched it! Well sometimes I accidentally opened programs in there and it seem so complicated that was as far as I went. So I read about what it could do and its functions and decided I was going to try using it. First stop was getting the guidance, this book was informative and very helpful! I am now using it every day and I feel like my comp is so much more organized and all my stuff is in one safe place!
