About the Author
Saul Alinsky was born in Chicago in 1909 and educated first in the streets of that city and then in its university. Graduate work at the University of Chicago in criminology introduced him to the Capone gang, and later to Joliet State Prison, where he studied prison life.�

He founded what is known today as the Alinsky ideology and Alinsky concepts of mass organization for power. His work in organizing the poor to fight for their rights as citizens has been internationally recognized. In the late 1930s he organized the Back of the Yards area in Chicago (the neighborhood made famous in Upton Sinclair's The Jungle). Subsequently, through the Industrial Areas Foundation which he began in 1940, Mr. Alinsky and his staff helped to organize communities not only in Chicago but throughout the country. He later turned his attentions to the middle class, creating a training institute for organizers. He died in 1972.

very good for being courageous to print it

very good for being courageous to print it. Awful, terrible, terrifying as to the theories, applications, planning of hateful political indoctrinating ideas, policies and actions. A great warning against tactics employed to brainwash populations and achieve super control over every aspect of peoples' lives. Deja-vu as far as previous Germany and Russia/cf. Hitler/Lenin/Stalin, Mao, et al. Warning, Warning, Warning!!! Once one falls into the traps posed by these "Rules", it is almost impossible to get out of it again. Looking back at history, it can make you sick to see that it is being tried all over again.
Kudos for the courage to publish it as a warning.

the more things change the more they stay the same

For its time, this is a pretty good guide on how to evoke change. I disagree with a lot of the actions he recommends, but I found it interesting that his take on the middle class in 1971 is how the middle class views its role in 2015. Prior to hearing about Alinsky a couple of years ago, I knew very little about him. When I bought this book I wasn't looking for a guide to change society but rather to get a perspective on how a radical thinks. There are a lot of similarities in his thoughts and actions and the thoughts and actions of some politicians today. It reads like a textbook and is pretty dry. I found it hard to stay awake and it took me quite a while to finish it.

Conned by ridicule and other rules.

I remember childhood when one of the worst things that could happen to me was ridicule, which is front and center in these rules. I was glad to become an adult when I could earn and keep respect of others. And now this book shows how childish behavior can tear down respect. Well, good for them. But understanding the mechanics and motivation of ridicule and of the other rules so clearly explained, I am not so easily conned by what those actions represent.
