The Original Grumpy Old Men
By Gary F. Taylor
There are two types of theatregoers: those who like Neil Simon and those who don't. With few exceptions, I fall into the latter category, largely immune to his charms--and this is particularly true of THE SUNSHINE BOYS, a play to which I've been consistently indifferent in all its various incarnations.
This is not to say that the play is poor quality. Far from it: Simon is a meticulous writer, and THE SUNSHINE BOYS shows him near the peak of his skills. The story concerns two aging actors, Lewis and Clark, who were once famous as a comedy team similar to Hope and Crosby, Lewis and Martin, and so on--but over the years their relationship became toxic. As the play begins they have not performed together or spoken to each other in a dozen years.
Both men are rapidly fading, Lewis living in a derelict apartment in New York, Clark assigned to a bedroom in his daughter's New Jersey home. Their reunion is the brainchild of Lewis' nephew Ben, who has had an offer for the two to recreate their famous "The Doctor" sketch for a television special--but there is considerable question as to whether the two can stand to be in the same room with each other, much less on the same stage. It soon emerges, however, that the two are locked in a "love to hate you" relationship, and fate has a final trick to play that ensures they will never be separated again.
THE SUNSHINE BOYS originally opened on Broadway in 1972, receiving a host of Tony Award nominations and playing over 500 performances; a 1997 revival also proved extremely popular, as did a television adaptation. It is probably best known, however, through its 1975 film version, which starred George Burns and Walter Matthau. It remains a tremendously popular play in regional and community theatre to this day.
When I review a playscript, I like to point out that there is usually quite a large difference between the way a play reads and the way it performs. This is actually less true of Neil Simon's plays that it is of most others, for Simon allows little wiggle-room in his constructs. Still, readers who have little background in the theatre may find any play somewhat difficult to grasp. Recommended, but primarily for fans of both Neil Simon in general and this title in particular.

A Brilliantly Comic Paean to Friendship
By A Customer
Critics have lately been calling THE SUNSHINE BOYS Neil Simon's masterpiece, and with good reason. The play seems to be the comedy to end all comedies. Its main characters, Al Lewis and Willie Clark, are elderly, retired vaudevillians who were a beloved team onstage but bicker over trivialities in real life. Their interaction in the play - as well as Willie's interaction with his nephew and agent, Ben Silverman - is almost entirely in the form of sight gags and one-liners; this is the most flamboyantly theatrical of all Simon's comedies. Yet, like THE ODD COUPLE, THE SUNSHINE BOYS is ultimately a celebration of friendship, as it eventually becomes clear that Al and Willie love and need each other, just as do Felix and Oscar in the earlier play. Their final scene together is one of genuine pathos, and this is, after all, another essential ingredient of fine comedy. As much as I love THE ODD COUPLE, THE SUNSHINE BOYS is my favorite Simon play, because, even more so than THE ODD COUPLE, it touches your heart as it makes you laugh out loud.

the sun never sets on good comedy
By Polly Smith
saw the movie about six months ago, was dismayed at how unfunny it was... the script, however, is a howl, and we simply can not read more than three or four pages without having to stop because we're laughing so hard... yet, there is much sympathy as willie praises al's talents, for all he dispses him.. can not wait to do this in its entirety...
