About the Author
Dr. Deborah K. Padgett is widely known for her expertise in qualitative and mixed methods including this third edition and a companion text Qualitative and Mixed Methods in Public Health (Sage, 2012). She is first author of Housing First: Ending Homelessness, Transforming Systems and Changing Lives�(Oxford University Press, 2015) and has published extensively on mental health needs and service use of homeless adults and other underserved populations. Dr. Padgett was Principal Investigator on two NIMH-funded R01 grants, both qualitative studies of engagement and recovery among formerly homeless adults in supportive housing in New York City. �She served as President of the Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR), culminating in the establishment of the SSWR "Deborah K. Padgett Early Career Award" in recognition of her contributions. She is a member of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare (AASWSW) and serves on its Board. In 2013, Dr. Padgett received New York University’s Distinguished Teaching Award.

Too expensive

To me, this book is a joke. I'm currently taking a graduate course in qualitative methods offered in the public health department at my university and this is the text we are using. My first complaint, if you will, is that this text is far too expensive for what it is. In my opinion, its worth half of the list price, at best.
My overall opinion of the text is that it is very shallow. I could see this book being used in an undergraduate course where students had absolutely no prior experience with any qualitative research. If you have any background at all in qualitative research/methods/analysis, don't waste your time. The chapter on ethical issues is nothing that hasn't been said before by hundreds of other authors, and should be common sense to pretty much all researchers. Chapter 6 "Entering the Field and Conducting Observation" and Chapter 7 "Interviewing and Use of Documents" are likely to be covered in any general methods class, and again don't add anything special that most researchers, or graduate students, probably don't know already.
I also have a big issue with Chapter 8 "Data Analysis and Interpretation". This chapter spends far too much space discussing the use of qualitative data management/analysis software packages. The book was published in 2012, so I have the feeling that most people would not find it shocking that software is now used to analyze qualitative data. Also, Padgett spends maybe a solid fifteen pages on coding data, and most of this is geared towards grounded theory methods (and even in her discussion about that she never makes it clear to the reader which form of GTM she is speaking of). Since she repeatedly jumps between qualitative methods (GTM, , ethnography, case studies, phenomenological research, etc), she really leaves the reader wondering how analysis is carried out throughout the methods she discusses.
Nonetheless, my suggestion would be to avoid this text and to refer to more classic scholars in the particular area you are interested in working from (for example, GTM see works by Glaser, Glaser & Strauss, Strauss & Corbin, and Charmaz).
