Book Design Made Simple by Fiona Raven and Glenna Collett is an invaluable resource for would-be authors contemplating self-publishing. While it is true that anyone can self-publish a book, the reality is that there are many obstacles between the first words on the page and the first copy off the press. Book Design Made Simple is a logical, clearly-written guide to an efficient, organized self-publishing process. It contains practical technical information on how to use the industry-standard publishing platform InDesign to format and assemble a book, design advice to help the author create a polished, aesthetically-pleasing finished product, and a production blueprint to guide the author’s development efforts. I purchased a copy of Book Design Made Simple midway through my own self-publishing process and it has without a doubt helped me create a better-looking, more professional product.

This book will have you up and running in InDesign quickly and confidently

I was actually surprised how fantastic a resource (but now how beautifully designed) this book is. I had previously done my book design in Word and was tired of the hours I spent cursing up a blue streak to try to get that annoying son of a sea biscuit to behave. Never again.
This book had me up and running with a fully formatted fiction book in a few hours. Seriously, a few hours. AND, I have finally found the program that, with a little creative use of my new knowledge, let's me prepare a paperback and an ebook from the same file. No more exporting in html from Word and importing into Sigil. No more having to change two books if I have to make edits. Nice. I am now reformatting all of my books. If I wasn't also giving them a bit of a copyedit and converting the chapter titles to images, I'd have them formatted in an hour or two each. Since it's a series, I can just pull my styles in from the previous book, and I'm done!
Now, don't get the idea that InDesign will never do something untoward. You may have difficulties that the book doesn't immediately address. In that case, there's Google. Or just undo until the problem goes away. Then, go back to the section where you made the mistake and you can learn from your mistake where you varied from the instructions.

Great Guide for Self-Publishers

Great book for those just starting with InDesign. I had some hands-on help with InDesign and book design before I bought this book, and I found the material helped supplement and fill in the details and techniques I'd forgotten to write down, or that we didn't get to. I highly recommend this book for anyone getting into self-publishing. My first novella turned out fantastically!
